2008 CX-9 tail lights on gate

Just purchased a 2008 CX-9 GT and brought it home last night. I used mazda247.com as a great resource prior to purchase.

Question is... In the two sections of tail lights (on the body and gate) the outboard sections on the body are functioning as running and brake lights. The inboard sections on the lift gate do nothing. That doesn't look correct to me and I didn't notice until we drove it home last night. Can someone confirm the proper taillight operation on a 2009 CX-9?

Thanks!

It looks like the inboard lights are also tail lights. Looking to confirm they should function as standard running tail lights, not necessarily brake lights. From this image it appears they do.

You are correct. There is a tail light above the reverse light. Quick search says it's a #2825 bulb.
