Downsizing to 17" wheels for snow tires

:
2010 CX-9 FWD Touring
My 2010 Touring came with 245/60-18 tires. Tire Rack is suggesting 245/65R17 - so I don't have the benefit of running a narrower tire. I do gain about a half an inch of sidewall, which would be helpful for dealing with all of the horrific potholes but I already have the benefit of using 18" rims vs the 20's. Is there any downside to running on a 17" rim? I assume it'll fit over the brakes if tire rack is suggesting it. I've used their downsize tire/rim packages in the past on other cars without problems, but they were narrower tires with a clearer benefit to downsizing.

I run 17" in winter, the major advantage is the lower cost (If you use separate rims). The 17" tires do handle potholes a little better too.
