I'm looking to pick up a new gen MX-5 and would like to get one with the factory LSD, how can I determine if a car has it?

Sorry, I meant a used car where they didn't keep the sticker.

Call Mazda NA with the VIN number. They should be able to tell you what options the car was built with.

I know on IS300's theres a marker in the VIN... theres gotta be a way to tell. Unless mazda guards all their secrets...

yeah, I still haven't found a way to tell.
On the current ones, its just a single option. You have to have one of the premium packages, but the LSD is another option on top. I wonder if I can tell by just looking under the car.

Jack it up and check the rotation

Here's what I remember about determining lim slip, verified by a quick google search:

Jack up both rear wheels. Spin one side by hand.

If the opposite wheel spins in the OPPOSITE direction, open rear end.

If the opposite wheels spinds in the SAME direction, lim slip.

Hope this helps.

This will not work with a helical (aka TorSen) LSD.
