I'm back with a small update. 2000 Protege LX 1.6L 200300 miles now but the car has the dreaded 0402 and 0302 codes that I can't get rid of.

need a 90 degree screwdriver to remove the lens. Any auto parts store should have them.

I have a 2000 LX with 1.6L and it indeed has the EGR valve. I have had it replaced twice, but the dreaded code still comes back.

2000 Protege LX 1.6L 190,000 miles. All original drivetrain with no mods. All stock.
