In theory it should be simple to replace the wiring for the internal USB ports to handle 2A. If there's a fuze for them, then that's to change as well.
There are other ways to attain higher amperage, such as my post above, or with something like...
Many modern cell phones need closer to 2 amps to provide decent charging times, and tablets need it for the sheer size of battery. It's also the power needed to overcome the minimum power needed to keep the device running while also charging it.
Until car makers change this I think we're stuck...

So I found myself a pair of (sedan style) fog lights for my '02 protege LX.
My car didn't come with them so I didn't think it was wired for them either.
