I got through to Mazda USA's support number (800 222-5500). The rep opened a case for me and contacted my local dealer. There's no fix yet and the next step is for me to call them back in two weeks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried to enter engineering mode but I seems to reset before the system fully boots so that didn't work. I also tried the hard reset and that didn't work either.

I have a Thule Atlantis 1200 box. It just fits on the factory crossbars. The bars at their farthest apart are still pretty close together but most of the new Thule boxes have adjustable mounts. The rear hatch has just enough clearance to open completely without touching.

I'd pull the carfax report on them. When I was looking last year there were a a lot of one year old CX-9's with just under 20K mileage. They were all used as rentals. I wasn't too keen buying an ex-rental and I think this can be bad on resale value.
On the subject of cargo boxes, I just installed OEM crossbars on my '08 CX-9 and gave my existing cargo box a try. I can confirm that my Thule Altantis 1200 did fit if I moved the cross bars and the Thule box mounts all the way forward. It's tight through and there's only a half inch or so of...
