headlamp help????

im just wondering on an mp5 were the back of the low beam headlamp bulb plugs in to another little black peace, then the black peace plugs into the cars white plug witch is the wiring harness. what is the perpouse of this black peace? will it do any damage if i remove it? the reason being is i just bought a wiring harness upgrade kit. it fits the blub itself but not the black peace thats on their factory. so i would have to plug ths new harness in directly to the blub. thx
