NHTSA has been involved in vehicle buybacks in the past, but never with anywhere near this many vehicles. A buyback usually happens when a problem is so serious that it can't be fixed and the vehicles need to be taken off the road, and one of this size likely will cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars or more.

It was unclear Sunday exactly what Ram models are covered by the buyback, but documents filed by Fiat Chrysler with the safety agency show a litany of problems in two recalls of the trucks dating as far back as 2011. Some of the problems have yet to be resolved. Trucks in the two recalls include certain 2008 to 2012 Ram 2500 4 by 4 and 3500 4 by 4, the 2012 Ram 3500 4 by 2 Chassis Cab and the 2008 Ram 1500 Mega Cab 4 by 4. Also covered are the Ram 4500 and 5500 from the 2008.

Unobtanium is right on Chrysler's quality. It seems Fiat and Chrysler shouldn't get married as both of them had always been infamous on quality.

Of course the problem is from before Fiat got involved so they had nothing to do with it.

Agreed, not with this particular issue. The point is that both are infamous for quality issues and the marriage creates a perfect storm.

I used to own a 2010 Grand Jeep Cherokee, and this is my surprised face. ALL of my friends tried to tell me NO! DO NOT! BUY THAT!!!!

Did I listen? No. No, I didn't. Not listening has gotten me pretty far in life as far as having and doing cool things, so I thought this would be one more case of "might makes right!" and I bought it, prepared to pay whatever it took to make it RIGHT. Turns out the tag was too high for me, and I was used to paying $1200/mo for a car note not so long prior. It was just insanity trying to keep that POS in good shape, and it wasn't "things that had been abused" unless you can "abuse" rubber into rotting, or water pumps into dying, or transmissions into leaking every 20K miles, or sun roof guides into breaking, or electronic 4WD FDCM modules into not working, or...

Of course, since they are defective, their buy back value is nil. Ouch!

"the company is allowed to repair and resell the trucks it buys back"

So they are not going to crush them, just buying back ones that owners are angry about, and then will resell them. Probably be on dealers lots soon.

They're also recalling 1.4 million vehicles, apparently they can be hacked via wireless. Just love high tech cars.

To think I entertained the thought of a '14 Cherokee for a few minutes last year. :)

I do have a '00 Wrangler 5-speed 4.0L that has been quite trouble free. Fairly crude and not especially fun to drive on pavement but entertaining off-road with the top off.

This is a scary thought....

An article in Car and Driver outlines just how much Ford had sheltered the brand from a host of economic hardships, and how future models must have a greater profit margin if the small company hopes to weather tougher economic climates. Because of this, rumors have been swirling of an impending merger with a larger company, and the most likely candidate is Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

If it happens, I'll keep my current Mazda, but I will never buy another one. Why would I? I bought it because I don't want to own a piece of s***.

Please say it isn't so. Nothing could be worse then Mazda getting in bed with these bottom feeding "hacks" called Fiat Chrysler.

That has been talked about for years, but this is the first time I'm hearing of Fiat being a candidate. Afterall, Mazda has entered into partnership with Toyota...

I imagine Fiat Chrysler could benefit from Mazda's technology and there might be some synergy with regards to parts sourcing from third parties but I doubt Mazda would let it dilute their automotive DNA that has made them so successful as of late.

Mazda helped Fiat develop the 124 spider based on the new Miata and is helping out Toyota with the next FR-S I heard. Mazda is bringing Skyactiv technology to the table. Toyota provides Mazda access to hybrid tech. Not sure what Fiat provides Mazda?

Exterior design? Kodo, Soul of Motion, with some sexy Italian flavor may look really nice... (whistle)

News coverage.

The Joker is not just "sure if serious?", he's also not sure what Fiat provides Mazda? LOL.

Size to absorb failure. Fiat is big enough that if Mazda puts out a few flops, it's no big deal. Mazda is small enough that if they put out a few flops, or even fail to capture a segment class lead, they could be in trouble.
