Won't go out of park

Wife's car won't go out of park unless she depresses the button next to the gear knob. Car starts but won't change out of park.

I read that the weight of the car can cause excessive strain on the transmission if the car is placed in park on any incline without the parking brake pulled. I have confirmed that this is not the case as she uses the parking break and I was able to replicate the problem.

I checked alldata and confirmed that the transaxle range switch may be the issue as the car does not have a neutral safety switch.

My question is, if the car starts in park but won't change out of gear would it still be the trans switch. I thought that it would be bad it it would only start in neutral.

Just to be sure, are you pushing the brake pedal in before trying to remove it from park?

Do your brake lights work?

A little off topic, but I told my fiancee back when I met her to stop parking on my hill without the parking brake. Did she listen? No. I wound up having to replace the solenoid pack.

There was once a thread on this. The reason why mazdadude asked if you are pushing the brake is because of the brake switch activates a solenoid in that shift lever box/areas.

a more detailed drawing of the above is below:

place ear near the shifter mechanism. or use sthetoscope. Then step on the brake pedal. There should be a faint 'click' as the 'release solenoid activates' If there is, then maybe the mechanism is just worn out or (hopingly) it just need some lubrication.

The dealership will of course simply replace the whole thing. And if it is under warranty why not.

Of course, and no, the brake lights are not working.

Sweet thanks!

Also, to save a possible headache. I am going to testy the brake switch. If it is bad it won't send the signal to the solenoid. It is at the brake pedal and is much easier to access than the solenoid under the shaft in the console. I also hope the switch is the problem because it is very inexpensive. PN BN7N-66-490

I found some great threads on the subject as the brake switch is part of the 3 cruise control conversion.

Great info from Skyhawk! Thanks!

Since DieHonda's brake lights aren't working, I am hoping it is just the brake pedal switch. (nailbyt)

Fixed. Brake Switch was bad. Took all of three minutes to replace.

If possible, order it online. Dealership raped me for it at $27 as it is $13 online.

Thanks!

Great to hear, thanks for the update!

Was the switch broken physically, or was it failing only under electrical test?

Looks like we have the same problem, brake lights are intermittent, mostly not working. I have to take it in for some other warranty work anyway, so that gets added to the list.

It's a certified used, so they replaced it under warranty. All is well now. I did take a look at it myself but figured why pay $20 when they can do it for free, plus we had a few other issues like the alignment to get taken care of.

Hello.
I am experiencing the same problem with the shift. I have my emergency brake light is on. And I noticed today that the s*** doesn't go off to drive. Do you think the cause of this problem would be a Neutral Safety Switch or shift lock solenoid? The guy who does the inspection told me that the problem is related to a security issue. I checked online and the prices are cheap. I just want to know what is the exact cause of this problem. Thanks to all.

Fixed my problem.
