Here is the exact molding used.

just use a degrease solution of choice on the rubber as there is a lot of greasy / oily residue that needs to be removed to make sure the Velcro pads adhesive properly to it.

I just walked around the store thinking about would work and bingo there it was.
good luck
Thanks for the idea. Got the molding, some velcro ($6 total) and 15 min later the dead pedal is well protected and it looks great. Thanks again.

Some good ideas here. I might just cut up the winter mat from the E92 and size it to fit on the foot rest. Another idea is to use diamond plate, if anyone has access to someone who can cut it. Found this on ebay:

I too never really thought about this until recently when I was cleaning the carpets and noticed there wasn't a dead pedal. I am not a DIY kind of person. And I cringe when I have to drill holes into a new car. Is there an easy and cheap way to do put something there to protect?

You cannot go any cheaper than hollis's solution. It looks great (in my opinion), it's practical and it's cheap (just over $6). I was considering Husky liners but they are expensive and I don't need them in Virginia. After 5 years, I can buy new carpet floor mats for half of Husky liners price.

Hey, i do really like the "German solution" is there a chance I can buy one? Thanks.. Karel Czech

This has to be the cheapest and easiest solution ever devised! Thanks so much! It took no time to install and for less than $4, I had enough material, including velcro tape to do the other 2 Mazdas in the family. Here's this pic from mine: (and it is black, as mentioned it just looks lighter in the pic)

So I had the old set of cheap aftermarket floor mats from my wife's car laying about, so I made dead pedal from one of the rear seat floor mats:

And on the back I cut off the nubs, and then filed down the crosshatch in the plastic. I then bought $3 worth of wide industrial strength velcro from Walmart so that it could stick to the carpet:

I'll add another picture when I install it in the car.

And here is the picture with it installed - as the piece of carpet is longer than the dead pedal, I pushed it over so the velcro behind would stick to the top of the pedal.

Well, I've ordered this set of pedal covers https://www.ebay.com (commissions earned) for less than 25 USD. I think it is worth this money instead of DIY.
I wanted only to have foot rest part, so other covers are not installed. I mounted it with provided screws and fixed to background without drilling. There is something soft, like plastic behind carpet.

The support behind the carpet is just expanded polystyrene (like the packing pieces used in large electronics, but black in this case). I was quite surprised - not sure how long it'll stand up to pressure.

Thanks for news. 50 USD just for foot rest is slightly over estimated in my opinion.
Polystyrene as a basic for foot rest is also surprising me. At least with this pedal cover I increased the durability likely.

My Weathertec matts took care of this problem.
