what tools does everyone use to clean their egr valve?

The original EGR design is crap - at 60K miles I cleaned the original with brake cleaner, soaked the thing for hours until it was spotless, but lo and behold, 10k later it was gummed up again.
Just get a new one with the better integrated heatshield design - that's what I did, the $80 is well worth avoiding the pain in the ass that it is to take the thing off, clean it and refit it every 10K miles.
To get the philips screws off the egr body you probably need an impact driver or you'll likely just strip the heads.
