What kind of pictures

Whoa! You don't need to spend that much unless you have a paid gig shooting for magazine layout. SLR's let you change the lens (wide angle, zoom, telephoto) but they generally come with a general purpose lens. So make sure that it is what you will need or otherwise just buy the camera body and then get the lens for your needs. But do you really need a SLR? Will you actually buy ($$$) and change to the best lens for each particular shot?

If you are just taking pictures of your car, friends cars, auto shows, or at the race track as part of the general public, you can get what you need for under $500. Research these links and do your homework so you don't overspend or no matter what the price, get something that doesn't fit your needs.

How big will you print your shots? 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, poster size? Even a $300 point and shoot will take awesome quality pics of 8x10 or less. Make sure you define your needs before you shop. Speed is relative. You might want to visit a real camera store that will let you spend 10 minutes taking shots to get a feel for the balance, performance, and how easy it is to use the menu system. Find one you like and you can always go buy that model cheaper elsewhere if necessary.

$1000 is not really that much for a nice camera and lens...The Rebel is around 800 or something...a NICE camera is about 4-10K...plus lenses...

Consider these things.....To properly use a DSLR you NEED to know HOW TO USE IT...You didn't make the statement that you know how to use a Single Lens Reflex camera...This is something that does take practice and knowledge to use to the fullest...If you are willing to take on that side of it, then definitely Go for the DSLR...If not, just look into the Slightly less costly, but more useful cameras...A lot of companies are making these "in between" models which don't have shutter speed control and aperture control, but if you don't use that, you don't need it...

Shop around a bit, you'll get better pictures with a camera you know how to use than one that you don't.

I've got a Sony Alpha...The reason I got it was the price and the stability control is in the body of the camera , which saves you at least 2-300 bucks per lens you buy. The Canons have the stability control in the lens, so you have to pay for it with every lens....

REbel XT for around 500USD at B&H Photo in NY. Look up their website. They got lots of nice things.

Slightly off topic, but having IS on bigger lenses, such as telephoto, is more beneficial having it in the lens than in the body. In-body IS is good for smaller, wider angle lenses but those types of focal lengths don't really require IS. Most can handhold at 10-15mm down to ~ 1/5 shutter speeds.

If you're buying an SLR, expect to spend much more than $1000 after all is said and done. Sure you can buy a body and standard lens for $500 which might last you a while, but if you actually use the camera, then eventually you will get a craving for a nice telephoto lens and a wide angle lens, and maybe some filters.

If you're looking for a camera that takes nice pictures and has a few of the perks of an SLR, you might look into the Canon S5. Its zoom has great range, it's reasonably fast (though can't compare to an SLR) and has IS. You can also get a lens adapter for it that will let you put conversion lenses or filters on it.

more megapixels do not mean better quality. You do not need a 9mp camera. 99% of the population do not need a camera like that. Having said that, you can get a good point and shoot ~5mp for 400-500 beans.

And yeah, dSLRs can get pricey. I have an easy $2500 in my bag, and it's not even top shelf. Just a D70s with 3 lens and accesories.

Digital Camera

Check out the Canon G9 - basically a point 'n shoot digital, that will do most of what your after, at much less expense than a Digital SLR ! (flash)
