Post some pics or give me some ideas of what you keep in that cubby? Wish they would have modified it for better use on the new 2016 since its no longer needed for the SD slot any more on that side. Its still kind of shallow and useless. Seems like anything would fall out, and that can be dangerous near the drivers feet.

An open silicone container for spare change and a few dollars for whatever

I spent more time and energy on this than I should have, but I had an RX-8 and I always kept spare change there for random things - parking meters, tips for parking in the off-site lot, etc. As the CX-5 cubby hole was not usable as is, I measured it and searched on Amazon until I found these containers - https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned). Fits perfectly enough for me, doesn't move, can't see that the back bit curves up from a normal angle. See pics with it installed - sorry about not being in-line, my browser is acting up.

that's a good idea, and the silicone tray wont slide out when you brake

I was wondering the same thing. I've had 10 quarters in mine for a few days. So far they haven't fallen out, but they shift around with turns.

New 2016 CX-5 GT here.

My 2014 Mazda 6 had a handy drop down storage unit that closed. I wish you could replace the useless mini "Cave" referred to here with that.
Maybe an aftermarket opportunity?

I'm thinking of putting a somewhat hidden Homelink ($25) transmitter in there

with just the buttons and bezel facing down from the top part

I ended up buying this http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-For-MAZDA-CX-5-cx5-central-control-storage-box-glove-box-for-cx-5/32470967630.html. Seems like the only thing to make it usable for me. Unfortunately it took forever to come in and also one of the slots melted to the other, so only one is usable. It still is good enough to fit my gym card, restaurant coupon cards, and buisness cards along with a streamlight penlight. It also fits in there really well and I'm still happy to have it. I may write them to try to get a replacement.
