THMotorsports Redline Time Attack Build-Up, Progress, and Racing thread.

Hey guys.

We have been supporting the Mazda community for a while now and try to help out with those pursuing their passion. We too are passionate about racing and building cars and here is one of our cars that we have been making some progress on.

Not sure how many people on here follow Red Line Time attack but we have been busy for the last year putting together a nice competitive car. We ran at Sebring a 2 moths ago and experienced a ton of problems, and slowly worked them out. After that we went to a few local-to-Chicago track days, with mixed, but better and better results.

We took the STi to Autobahn Country Club Race track this weekend for a high speed autoX. Basically standing start HOT lap, and a fly by finish at the finish line. Pretty fun...great competition.

Well.....we had some issues. After tooling around with the ECU and figuring out why its not regulating boost correctly a light was shined down on us through the gloomy clouds.

We ran the waste-gate with the stock spring set at 1.2 BAR, instead of using the faulty boost controller which was supposed to be set @ 1.8 BAR. Instead the boost controller would randomly let the turbo go as far as it can. 2.2 BAR+ (not fun/good)

With a nice steady boost delivery we focused more on the driving. We were able to knock out lap times that were basically just as fast, if not faster faster than our competition did at Red Line Time Attack at the same track 2 months ago. We should be very competitive in the up coming season if we keep this up.

Overall a great learning experience and yet another track day to further prepare us for Redline Time Attack next season. We want this car to be more than bullet proof.

BTW our Ghetto lip is a new test in progress. ha ha...it turned out pretty good with lots of grip. We basically lowered it by about 3 inches to see how it would react. It did very well and we will make a nice non duct tape version of it.

Also front overfenders were finally painted and rear overfenders will be going on as well. Updates soon.

Thanks for looking...videos coming soon.

BTW check out THM Racing for some of the past event details including our build thread.

Forgot to add that we were just at Blackhawks Farms Raceway about 2 weeks ago, mustered off a 1'21" 198, which was good enough for 4th in MWCSCC.

Heres a little writeup I did.

This past weekend the THM crew ventured out to Blackhawk Farms Raceway with the Salt Creek Sports Car Club and the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs for a high speed auto cross. Generally, when the average racer hears “auto cross” they associate it with racing around cones in a parking lot. Truth be told, high speed auto crosses are more similar to full fledged track day. You are timed for one full lap, beginning from a dead stop; pretty cool if you ask me. The competition was rather fierce, as was the weather.

Upon arrival at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, Il, the team encountered a generous amount of rain. This put quite a damper on all the morning sessions, luckily enough, they were only practice. A few warm up laps showed the true colors of the Toyo R888 tires in wet conditions. While traction was ample in the straights, it suffered severely in the turns. By the time the afternoon rolled around, the track had completely dried creating more favorable conditions for all competitors.

Many of the issues plaguing the crew at the last track day were ironed out including the ECU problems and the mushy brake pedal. It seemed as though the car was finally near 100%! To this day, the drivers of the car still comment on how crisp the handling is, much thanks to the Stance 3 Way Coilovers and the Toyo R888’s. As well, the car was only running the pump gas map, though still proved to be a worthy competitor on the track. The driver, Andrei Tsaran, commented that “the car could use a bit more power, as we have not found the limits yet. Aero also needs to be developed, but the new diffuser seems to be doing a great job in the rear.”

As with any race car, and fine wine, it only gets better over time. It seems as though we have a winning combination, overall, and just needs to be dialed in to be in the top of the class. Out of the 108 entrants, the THMotorsports came home with 4th place. A few more trips to the track, and some power tweaks, we should see this car skyrocket to the top. Ill let the pictures and video do the rest of the talking…

Damn, that thing looks fun. Any reason you're going with the R888s instead of something stickier?

Also: Needs more mazda content ;) :p

Have the rear quarters been cut for the over fenders already? It looks like a damn monster truck haha. Good to see your making improvements. Crazy boost spikes can be scary on track!

Boost spikes + Fuel cuts = scary and annoying...lol. But we got it all figured out now finally. Yeah, the fenders were cut...to clear the beefy tires and wheels. We got some sweet rear overfenders that just got done painting. We will update once they are on...they are sweet. Nice wide body look.

Unfortunately the rules for Red Line Time Attack indicate that those tires and wear rating are the most we can do. So we are doing all test and tuning on the R888. They are great tires...but yeah Hoosiers would be nice...just not allowed.

Oh we will have some awesome mazda content on here once the ball is moving on the RX8.

here is a little sneak peak of the engine:

Some pics form last weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana California. We had our STi geared up to compete in round 3 of Redline Time Attack but unfortunately we blew both head gaskets and were pushing a bout half a gallon of coolant a lap so we called it quits. Motor will be stronger and will push even more power once finished.

We had a good deal of new issues at Willow Springs. Most were overcomed with hard work and dedication. Racing and development is a fun battle!!!

Issue 1. Low than zero oil pressure. Oil pump went down due to bad machining/shimming than damaged the piston inside.

Issue 2. no fuel pressure. One of the walbros in the tank died. We replaced it.

Issue 3. Knocking, hesitation. It was 105-110 degrees outside and track temps @ 165 degrees. Decreased the timing a tad and changed the spark plugs we were good to go.

Issue 4. Electrical failure. Car died while we had 6 car lengths over the K&N G35.

Back to Chicago and prepping it up for all the local events, including but not limited to the GTA @ Autobahn later this year.

More updates soon.

It must help a ton in high speed... I mean even an air dam and splitter helped at autox speed, that big of a wing must have done a significant difference.

BTW, what suspension are you guys on?
