Some questions about 1st and 2nd gen rx7

where are you located? it almost sounds like you have NO import cars where you live...

I live in south-central pennsylvania. It's not that there's no import cars, we've go 5 billion honda civics and cars like that, just nothing nice. Everybody that wants an import around here either gets a honda civic or chevy cavalier(kids pretend cavaliers are imports) and mods the hell out of it. If there's one car I can guarantee you i'll never own it's a honda civic.

There's just nothing around that's actually intended to be a performance car from the factory like 240sx's, supras, rx7s, or really anything light and powerful with rear wheel drive.

What about a '94-'97 Miata, it's light and RWD...not as powerful as a RX-7 Turbo II or what not, but just as fun.

hell a 90-93 with the 1.6L for $1200 you can get a used greddy kit and fmic running on it and almost double the power if you after drag racing

or for the same $1200 you can modify the suspension and handle on par with most cars on the road with a good set of tires.

I dont know exactly where you live but you said south central, so I picked as south central as I could find and used the Jackson zip code and found a bunch of results.... here is an example... This car is 5500 dollars and the thing already has an SR20DET swap with extra stuff... The car looks clean from the pictures... I don't know if you are trying to find a car right in your town or what, but a 2 hour or less drive would easily put you in range of quite a few cars if you look around.

you wouldn't really even have to mess with this car if you didnt want to:

I like that, too bad I don't have the money right now, because i'd probably get it. I don't urgently need to trade my car right now, so i'm just going to save as much money as I can until I can pay in cash, instead of dealing with a loan.

Thanks guys, it looks like when the time comes i'll be looking for a 240sx.

I though about a miata, but it's just too small. I think they're cool little cars, and I know it would be a blast to drive, but only 2 seats would be pretty inconvenient when it's going to be my only car. With all these idiots driving suvs and talking on cell phones these days a small ride like a miata isn't the safest ride to be in, it's more like a speed bump than a car.

The other cars you were looking at were 2 seaters...

And as a Miata driver I know how big SUVs are...luckily the car is so nimble I can just swerve out of the way of thier stupidity.

They were all 2 seaters? What about the 240sx?

there some 2+2 rx7s out there

Yeah, 2nd gens had an availible rear seat option...I've seen 1 or 2. The rear seat is good for double femur amputies, dwarfs(the medical condition), and 0-4 year olds. LOL

Well, back to the drawing boards. I just looked up perormance numbers for a 240sx and it's disappointing. Barely 20 hp more than my escort, and it weighs more, so I doubt it would be any faster.

stock they are slow, they have a k24de truck motor for god sake!

swap in an sr20 for about 2-3 grand, or buy one swapped and its a 2L sr20det, t25 turbo, good power and tq, great response, and its pretty quick for a 2800lb car.

I don't want to buy a car and have to heavily modify it to fit my needs. I'd rather start out with something that suits me. I don't have the tools or experience to do engine swaps, and within a few years a car with a swapped engine might not even pass pennsylvania's state emissions inspection. They have a law in the making that would require a car to have the exact type of engine that it had from the factory. Even if the engine was an option on that car from the factory this law would still prevent it from passing inspection if that's not the engine that comes up under the car's VIN number.

Is there a price range you are looking at? Considering what you have shot down, and what you've given as requirements.... Maybe you are setting your goals a little high...... Oh, and what about a Porsche 944, or maybe an old VW Beetle?

I'm looking for something around the $5000 range. A v6 mustang or camaro would fit my wants/needs, but I already owned a mustang, and know a bunch of people with cars like that, so I was trying to be a little more open minded with it.

its too bad the miata is too small for you

90 miata for maby 1-2 grand.
greddy turbo kit - 1 grand
various bits for more power from the greddy kit - 1k
tires and suspension - 1k

thats around 5k for a car that could be running low 13s in the 1/4 and driving like its on rails.....of course for that price those parts would be used. but it would be a fast/fun little car.

If I could find a running miata for 1-2 grand I might get one, and get a larger vehicle for a daily driver, but the prices are nuttier than a squirrel turd, so I wouldn't be able to buy it and a 2nd vehicle. 2 days ago I saw a mostly stock 93 with 103,000 miles for sale for $6100, and today it was sold! They don't all go for that high, but I never saw one for less than 4.

it's true, miata prices varies GREATLY by region, and also by condition; the $6100 '93 must've been in near-mint condition

i've never seen a Miata in my area (DC area) listing for less than $2000...

true that, Im lookign for a 95 with around 100k miles on it in good body/interior condition, mechanicaly I want it to run good enough for a daily driver, but im going to build the motor and swap the trany anyway, so it doesnt have to be perfect. I have a buget of 4-5k (i want one with a hardtop on it) and I have several within 100 miles that are just what Im looking for.

Also with used car, show up with cash and see what happens. Ive been with friends who get used cars for close to HALF what the owner lists it for with cash.

Money Talks.

What do you guys think about Mitsubishi Eclipses? I know the base models aren't real performance oriented, but i've noticed AWD turbocharged 1st and even 2nd gens in the classifieds pretty often for good prices.
