Mazda 3i (2.0) lag @ 6500 rpm

Sometimes (probably all the time since it is rare) when I downshift to 3rd and run the revs up, the engine begins to cut out around 6500 rpm. I know that 6500 is redline so is the 2.0 engine have a torque limiter? It isn't a big deal if it is, I'm just wondering.
 
no way to get around it unless you get a standalone, but the engine doesnt really make much ater 6000 to make it usefull

Thank you. I did find out that I wasn't acheiving any extra acceleration after about 6100-6250 (scary looking down at the tach when you're doing nearly 90 - yeah, I'm a woos).
