Horsepower!!!

I know this topic is all over the place, but this is dedicated to horsepower facts, and tips only. My first ? is bout whp. I know straight engine hp on my 02 is suppose to be 130 stock which ive heard is 95 whp, but what about the mods, they say 8hp gain or 10 hp gain, is that whp gain or engine hp gain?

usually it's crank hp, and it's approximate and it's in the best of conditions possible.

well how much should you cut that hp by, like if they say 10hp is it prolly 5 or 7 maybe?

with the mods on your sig you should be at about 120 at the wheels

the difference between the whp & bhp numbers are due to drivetrain losses. It takes alot of power to turn all the gears and wheels. I'd say drivetrain loss in a protege is probably about 20% or so.

from the info i have heard over the years its usually close to 12% for FWD & RWD and a 25% loss in AWD

general rule to estimate is

FWD HP less 12-15% is WHP
RWD HP less 15-19% is WHP
AWD HP less 20-25% is WHP


This is a very rough way to estimate but tends to be about right.

After the recent dyno meet, I'd bet money on 110whp on a dynojet dyno.
