Where do you go for oil changes?

On my 10K oil change I set the flex schedule knowing I would change oil at 15K but wanted to see what it would say. At 15K it still said 80%. Actually it stayed at 100% for quite a while when I set it, then to 90% then back to 100% then 90 and finally 80%. I asked about it because of the TSB regarding that and they said there was nothing to change and Mazda was not happy about how it performs but eventually it will pop up as needing change.
Not sure I trust it. What are the parameters it uses? Does it account for short trips, cold weather, long idling, and all of those situations Mazda claims as "severe" in oil change schedule?
That's a odd behavior as mine will only be going down on oil life percentage and never go up. But I use only Mazda moly oil as the owner's manual does say Mazda or Castrol 0W-20 oil is required for accurate flexible OCI calculation. I believe oil life calculation does include short trips, cold weather, long idling, and all of those severe conditions. But you can always change oil earlier than oil life indicated if you don't feel comfortable.

I set the flexible maintenance OCI since new. 8.5 months and 5,073 miles later the oil life was 30% and the red "Oil change due" message came up. I knew that was too early as the owner's manual says the message is displayed "when the remaining oil life distance is less than 500 km (250 miles), or remaining days are less than 15 (whichever comes first)." But I changed oil anyway unfortunately the red "Oil change due" kept coming back and disappearing even though the oil life was 100% after the reset. I took the printout of ENGINE OIL FLEXIBLE MAINTENANCE DOES NOT WORK 2014-2016 Mazda TSB showed to my service advisor, he followed the procedure on TSB and updated the PCM software. Since then the message had popped up once. Now at 12 months and 8,626 miles, oil life is at 70%.

If your 2016 CX-5 has VINs lower than JM3KE656820 or assembled before April 8, 2015, make sure to have your PCM software updated.

My VIN starts with JM3KE4, so I guess I need to look into having the software updated. Also, the link posted above in post #42 seems broken. Is there another source of this TSB somewhere?

The CX-5 is a piece of cake. Just do it yourself. Count the number of cars / bikes (CX-5 is the last one on the driveway). How long would I need to take EACH of them out for oil change? LOL

I use the dealer when I can get their coupon...$40 for Change out w/ Mobile 1 0w20!...Not a bad deal IMHO.

Check Mazda USA ...Owners for coupons.

I looked on the site but can't find anything about coupons. Where should I be looking?

The TSB link was provided by Kedis82ZE8 in this post from another thread. I double checked and it's indeed broken. I guess there is a timeframe restriction for non-member to view it.

Here is the printout version I saved so that you can print it out and take it to your dealer:

ENGINE OIL FLEXIBLE MAINTENANCE DOES NOT WORK 2014-2016 Mazda

MULTI-MODEL ENGINE OIL FLEXIBLE MAINTENANCE DOES NOT WORK
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS

2014-2015 Mazda3 vehicles (Japan built) with VINs lower than JM1BM267077 (produced before March 30, 2015)
2014-2015 Mazda3 vehicles (Mexico built) with VINs lower than 3MZBM207478 (produced before April 1, 2015)
2016 Mazda6 vehicles with VINs lower than JM1GJ425952 (produced before April 8, 2015)

COMPLAINT:
Some customer using Flexible setting for Oil Change in the maintenance monitor may notice that the oil change due notification will not work because of improper control logic of the PCM. This TSB is applicable for the following cases.

The oil change due notification does not come on, even after mileage exceeded 10,000 miles.
Oil life in the center display is still less than 40% even though the mileage exceeded 7,000 miles.

To display Flexible setting and Oil life on the center screen, select the Applications screen, Maintenance, then Oil Change tab. For complete details, refer to the MAINTENANCE MONITOR OPERATION PROCEDURE in the Workshop Manual.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Reboot the IDS to clear memory before reprogramming.

2. Using IDS 96.01 or later software, reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration (refer to Calibration Information table) by following the Module Reprogramming procedure.

NOTE:
Verify the current PCM file name in the vehicle by the log view screen. If it is the same as found in the chart below (or later), it is not necessary to reprogram the PCM.
Always update the IDS tool first, then follow the on-screen instructions to download the calibration file for PCM reprogramming.
Refer to Service Caution for reprogramming on MS3 IDS Page.
After reprogramming, verify the file name matches with the chart below.

NOTE:
It is not necessary to remove any fuses or relays during PCM reprogramming when the IDS screen prompts you to do so. You may accidentally stop power to one of the PCM terminals and cause the PCM to be blanked, or you may receive error messages during the IDS reprogramming procedure.
IDS shows the calibration part numbers after programming the PCM.
Please be aware that PCM calibration part numbers and file names listed in any Service Bulletin may change due to future releases of IDS software, and additional revisions made to those calibrations for service related concerns.
When reprogramming a PCM, IDS will always display the latest calibration P/N available for that vehicle. If any calibration has been revised/updated to contain new information for a new service concern/issue, it will also contain all previously released calibrations.
Start/Stop button vehicles only: DO NOT press the start/stop button during the reprogramming process.
When performing this procedure, we recommend using the Power Supply mode in the Battery Management System to keep the vehicle battery up to capacity. If a different charger is used, make sure it does not exceed 20 AMPS. If it exceeds 20 AMPS, it could damage the VCM.

3. After performing the PCM reprogramming procedure, clear DTCs.

4. After clearing DTCs, start the engine and confirm that no warning lights stay on.

NOTE:
If any DTCs should remain after performing DTC erase, diagnose the DTCs using MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual section 01-02.
After PCM reprogramming, it is no longer necessary to road test the vehicle to relearn KAM (Keep Alive Memory).

Approved J2534 Device with Mazda J2534 Software FMP & MMP

Mazda uses a very similar program to FMP, named MMP, MMP allows for reprogramming of PCMs only, no body modules.

The security information is separate from the programming subscription and you must email information to Mazda for the Immobilizer/PATS codes.

Some reflashes require access to TSBs, and they are not included in the programming subscription.

The MMP software covers model year 1996 and newer models for reprogramming.

Using car ramps changing the CX-5 oil is rather easy. Next time I have to remember to use the ziplock bag technique when removing the oil filter. Saves time from cleaning up oil spills/drips.

Already have Fumoto Valve installed.

I buy Mazda molly oil + filter + gasket online and I take the car to my buddy's auto repair business to have the oil changed.

Believe me... if I had a trusted mechanic like some of you do I would gladly hand off my vehicle maintenance. My issues are mainly trust and not really any pride about doing the job myself. I just want to ensure the job is done right.

Mazda dealer. If any issue arises that is traced to it, it's THEIR problem. This is why I always go to the dealer. They break it, they buy it. I learned that lesson when changing a PCV valve in a friend's Jeep. The hose was brittle and broke. I had to buy him a new hose for the PCV valve. A favor ended up costing ME $20.
