I do recall another article that explored the idea that puberty, or simlar life events in other animals, as something of a death knell. With the main purpose in life being procreation, natural growth and physical upkeep are diminished as the reproduction period of your lifespan passes.
A test was performed on flies that involved delaying sexual maturity. If I remember correctly, they live about 30-something days under normal conditions. The flies who's sexual maturity was delayed, lived an impressive 91 days...
