I am not sure how the contact work, but the driver's switch can put down/up the front passenger window. The Passenger's door switch can only put the window up. 1. Does this seem like a contact issue too? 2. Can the switch be removed without removing the door panel?

I had a similar issue and it was the negative battery cable was not tight on the post and coincidently it was after a T-belt change at local shop.

Could the rattle be the exhaust heat shield (if yours still has one)?

If you take the negative cable off battery and wait a few minutes (10-15), the airbag system is disabled. I have not had to replace heater core on Protege, but did on Ford Ranger/Mazda truck and dash had to be removed.

My guess is he meant to look for a replacement seat at the junkyard. I have no idea of the cost for #10 in the diagram, but a complete used seat might be the cheapest option assuming you don't have the leather interior. http://www.car-part.com/index.htm
