Granddaughter broke the timing belt on a Protege we've had since new. When I removed the valve cover a pin and spring fell out of it as I was stepping away from the car. The pin is about an inch long with a "button" top and it appears that you slip the spring over the shaft and put it into a recessed hole machined into the valve cover. What I can't figure out is what if anything is supposed to hold it in place when you flip it over to re-install the cover. My Mazda guy, whom I've used for probably16-17 yrs. says that there is no part like that listed which would indicate it's supposed to be permanently in the valve cover and it's a discontinued part (the valve cover). I think it possibly has something to do with the PCV circuit.
