About 500 miles ago a friend and I changed the timing belt and components. Car has ran fine up until it died. Went to leave work, car idled for 15 seconds and died. Had it towed to a shop because I was 2 hours from home. They just called and said that when the camshaft pulleys are lined up the crank is retarded 90 degrees from tdc.

They are saying they want to replace the timing belt and components because they think it may be due to faulty components or something getting between the let and crank pulley and causing it to slip.

Anyone ever hear of or have this happen to their timing belt?

It definitely could happen if the damper in the tension idler failed. That little spring prob wouldn't hold the torque of the valve train against the crank by itself.
Not a mechanic but I could see that possibility.
