HOW TO - MSP Sub/Amp Rack install on a P5

JDM-P5

2006 Speed6 GT
This is a *Stealth* install, DON'T do it if you are a person that wants everyone to see what you have back there (showoff etc.), but DO it if you like the simple ways of getting a little better sound from a readily available stock part & especially if you don't want those pesky thieves gunning for your boom boom...

....well, I'm the type of person that says, with a little dedication & determination, you can accomplish anything. Well, as a few of you already know, I have the sub/amp rack from the MSP. Well, I had the rack mounted on my cargo floor. Looks cool, but doesn't really work for transporting cargo...or groceries etc., as everything usually goes in the backseat nowadays. Well, thanks to Barry (Jackelope) and a quick look in his MSP trunk, I noticed that I might be able to mount the amp/rack in the back of the P5 just like how you'd be able to mount it in the sedan version. Now, there's other options, such as mouting it directly to your seats, BUT, you lose 60/40...not very appealing...so this was the route I took. Also, go figure, you can't fit the damn brackets for the MSP sub/amp rack w/out doing a little cutting of the plastic paneling. Well, that's where the Dremel came in handy...see pics.
Enjoy my genius...and if you've already done this....kudos to you also...but please let me bask in my glory. Sounds great back there too...no rattles!
-Phil
I have a completely functional trunk once again....w/the use of 60/40 rear bench seat. YAY for experimentation...like watching those 2 chics go down on each other when you were college.

This is something I'll have to see. I thought about going that route...but that plexiglass is going to get scratched up one way or another. Just be mindful of that bro.
Also, how are you going to fit 2 12's down there? That's going to be a bit tricky. No?

I have that amp, cept I have a 350watt one, things old as hell but its the only amp that I have had last me for over 2 years, and who knows how long the guy before me had it. Runs my speakers like a champ, and goes on sub duty when my sub amps have died on me in the past. Has ran a few days at 1ohm before I realized I didnt change the wiring on the sub to 4ohms, oops. yay for old school kenwood. Arent you a bit worried having the amp upside down though? I always thought it would cause it run hotter because the heatsink would retain heat? Nice for sure, I wouldnt mind having my hatch area back again...

Nope, no problems because that's how the Mazda Speed sedan has it set up (Upside down). Just like that. And I bet I probably get better air circulation w/the hatch vs. the enclosed trunk of the sedan. :)

easy enough

there's a good 4 inches of space above the floor, up to the lip where the hatch closes that i can use as well

gonna be 90% covered, just enough space in the covering for the subs to let air flow, then covered by something heavy enough to hold some weight

Ahhhh...now I gotcha! Yeah man, keep us posted. I'd love to see when it's done.

Curious...the stock MSP has a plug coming off of the amp....what doe it get plugged into? I disconnected it and ran Monster Cable from the head unit all the way back.

and this bracket its the one from the MSP?
Yes, this bracket was donated to me from a MSP owner....I sat there and pulled it off myself @ the G.A.C.C meet a few months back. For a nice, stealth appearance, good bang for your buck & a pretty easy install, this is the way to go I'd say...especially since you get to keep 60/40 and ALL of your trunk space!
DYI pwns all

I don't know what the part number is. I'm sure any Mazda dealer can assist. Maybe Ken @ Protege Garage??

can someone tell me why these links don't work....im sure it is something to do with changing the domain from msprotege to mazdas247 or something. I jsut want to figure out how to do this in my car.
