Help needed: How to remove front strut

I made an attempt at removing the front struts on my Mazda 5 (to replace) following instructions for the 3. But I can't push the lower control arm low enough to disengage the strut. It is clearly loose, but it seems that I need a inch or so more travel in the suspension. I'm hoping that it isn't necessary to remove the drive axle. The axle nut is a large special nut (26mm or so).

TIA.

I just did front struts on the wife's 5 yesterday.

The steering knuckle that grabs the struts can be a pita. I got it as low as I could with a board and sledge(pounding the board on the knuckle)Then, with one bolt still loosely attached at the top and plenty of penetrating oil on the strut, I stepped on the rotor with one foot while twisting the assembly left to right(I held onto one of the spring coils) and it broke loose.

Hope this helps.

Yes, what the man said^^ The clearances are small, but with the strut knuckle opened up the old strut will pop out of there. The new one won't want to go in without the knuckle being spread slightly also.
