exhaust sensor (lambda) ??

Im installing a 1989 BP 1800 motor and running gear in a project , i was wondering if its ok to omit the exhaust sensor as im building a new manifold ? . The engine is all standard and im keeping standard injectors and management, im guessing the management computer will not operate without the sensor in place ? any ideas ??. is it a simple job or reprogramming pain ??
