2003 radio question

I have a friend that has a 2003 Protege. I helped him put a radio in his car because his last one the sound would stop after a few minutes of playing. We assumed the radio was at fault and swapped it out. Now the new radio is doing it as well. I am now thinking there is a factory amp in the car that is at fault. Does this car have one? If so, where is it located? Thanks.

No only an internal amp in the head unit. If it is a mazdaspeed model it will have a kenwood amp in the trunk but that only runs the subwoofer.

OK so then if the HU were replaced that wouldn't have any bearing on the problem

The sound cuts off but the stereo still works? That is beyond strange

Yes it's driving me crazy. 3 different radios too. I'm going to run all new speaker wire and bypass all the in car stuff

It's possible somehow there is a short that is overheating the internal amp and putting into protection mode. Just an idea.
