New 2017 CX-5 Revealed

I just got back from test driving both gens, and while I don't have the pre-'17 experience you all do, I have a few impressions.

First of all, as far as interior, while the 16.5 is nice, the 17 is just better. I think they achieved their goal of it feeling more premium. Regarding cabin noise at highway speeds, yes, it's quieter in the new one, but I didn't think it was *that* big of a difference. Is it noticeable? Yes. Night and day? No. I'm not saying that in a good or bad way...just saying. I didn't find the 16.5 offensive in the cabin, but I can see where others would.

The exterior of the 17 really does make it look like a more expensive car, though not to the level of actual luxury cars/SUVs, but that's what I expected based on the pics. One thing I didn't like was that the chrome trim that comes to a V in the center of the bumper isn't one piece; there's a line down the middle of it, where it connects. For me, that looks a bit cheapish, though many may not notice or care.

I agree with those of you who say that no one really needs a huge amount of power, but after experiencing this 4-banger for the first time, I'm a little underwhelmed. I agree with reviews that say it's "adequate". To be fair, I'm coming from the killer Tundra 5.7, so that's obviously coloring my opinion. I used the Sport mode, which worked well enough.

In terms of handling and ride, I think my expectations might have been a bit too high. If I had driven a CRV/Rav-4/etc beforehand, maybe I'd feel a bit different, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Some of that is based on the fact that I didn't take corners too aggressively, as I was with the sales guy and didn't get nuts since we passed several cops, but I got on it several times. As far as the ride, the 17 handled bumps a bit better, but I'd need more time to give a better assessment. Basically, I wish I could get a re-do or a second drive.

Anyway, I might test drive the CX-9, as I wonder if its bigger size and acceptable mileage might be a good compromise, for the Tundra. (I haul lots of music equipment and need the room) That said, I still liked the 5. The sales guy stated the obvious, which is that I'll get a much better deal with a 16.5. Anyway, I have some time to decide on a few thousand less for a good interior/exterior, or wait and pay more for an even better interior and see if the diesel has a bit more pep.

Hope some of this was informative.
Thank you for a well written and informed first impression.

I agree with others that said if you are used to bigger, maybe CX-9 is the way to go, unless you are wanting to downsize, then go with the 5.

Give one a whirl and go from there. :)

Go big or go home?

Then get a Cayenne S. [emoji23]
I wouldn't call getting a base F-Type "going big"

I never said base but with a starting price of 62k and it couldn't be my only car, its going pretty big for me at least...2 is better than 1
Or a cayman s or an m2..but i have a feeling the rf may just fit the bill for me. I don't need to hit 60 in 4 seconds or less.

Edit... here's some quotes in case he decides to edit his CRV forum posts:
Mangoconchile on the CR-V Forum in all his glory:

...and just to show how great Honda integrated CarPlay with their system, here's a thread of their issues:

I want Mazda to bring it... but I also want them to do it correctly, not jam it in roughly like Honda did.

Yeah, I don't know why Mango feels a need to make every thread he posts in a CX-5 vs. CR-V thing.

Moreover he's been proven time and time again to say one thing in the CR-V forum and then the complete opposite on this forum. (Such as the 37k price and now the Crapple Carplay issues). Also for someone who is "completely satisfied, no regrets" with their CR-V purchase, Mango sure has a hell of a lot more posts here on the CX-5 forum...

Obvious troll is obvious. Time to starve it.

Dude, 237 was a made-up number! Chill with the descriptive statistics! I'm fine with people looking at vehicles with a critical eye. My '16 CX-5 has squeaks (However, it still has better build quality than the interior of the '17 CR-V that I test drove.) What I have a problem with is someone who seems to go out of his way to focus on the negative.
Under your close watch you figured I have 237 negative posts so far. But consider I have had 3,640 total posts that's merely 6.5%! Please count your comments among your 122 posts critical to the forum members and see what is your percentage of doing that instead of talking cars?

This's a car forum. Criticizing cars is fine, but criticizing people is not!

I reset the head unit to factory default settings. Fixed. Done. Haven't had any issues since. And Mazda isn't 'bringing' anything. If they were they would already have in their vehicles.

When you get back to back Mazda reps telling every. single. blog. and. news outlet. That AA and carplay is coming, and with additional details that it is expected by end of 2017 for most, and may need a hardware upgrade to do it. That isn't a generic "yeah yeah its coming". That is a pretty specific set of details.

And I say this as I've read EVERY single review in the last 2 weeks. These details are coming from two things. First the original announcement of the 2017 CX-5 March 8th. This is the dude who made the announcement

Jacob Brown
Specialist, Product Communications at Mazda North American Operations

Production communication doesn't announce this kinda thing at a launch unless they are planning it. Remember a couple years back of a diesel Mazda6 in the states? From what I remember that was a rumor, not an announcement.

Secondly during the test drives where the press was invited to tool around last week?. The same thing was said. This is back to back statements.

Now yes. This could fall through but when you get two sources stating this and from Mazda communication reps who are notorious about what comes out of their mouth because that is how they are trained? That coupled with looking to be considered a "premium" brand. Its a pretty good bet.

Like I said, keep dreaming. Funny how these 'Mazda Reps'(or maybe it just one rep) says it's coming, yet nothing official coming from Mazda on their website. Can you provide me a link from Mazda's website of where it states it's coming? You should be able to do this as you are so sure it's coming right? Please provide me a link and not some 'hearsay' from some rep no one has ever heard of.

Not even a timeline they can provide.....Like I said days ago, don't buy a Mazda vehicle based on a rumor that AA/CarPlay is coming. You buy one when Mazda actually deploys it or provides a timeline on when it's coming.

I guess Samsung and Apple aren't bringing out new phones either otherwise they would already be out already. See how dumb that sounds? They are working on it. It's just not ready. They don't want to have to worry about people factory resetting their systems like you did with your Honda. The fact that you had to means the Honda system is buggy. May still work but obviously faulty. And yes, I just googled issues with AA/Carplay and honda and tons of forums posts.

Except for the fact that Samsung and Apple have had the IPhone and Galaxy lineup for 10 years in a row so it's reasonable to expect they will release a new one this year. Mazda on the other hand has 0 vehicles in their lineup with CarPlay/AA and haven't even put out a statement of when it's coming. See how smart that sounds? This isn't even an opinion, ITS A FACT.

Why are we still having this debate anyway? As of today(3/26/2017) Honda has CarPlay/AA in their vehicles and Mazda does not. PERIOD. Debate over. Not even a timetable of when it's coming. Just the same old, 'they're working on it' shtick over and over again that for some reason people believe. I guess it gives some people 'hope'.

And funny how somehow my 'Honda' system is buggy. Every single forum Iv'e come across for vehicles that offer CarPlay/AA(BMW, Mercedes, VW, Honda) is going to have users report issues with CarPlay/AA. Some people have issues, the VAST majority do not otherwise you'd see dealers have thousands of cars in their service departments for this across the country. You research the issue, correct it and never deal with it again, same as any other computer/phone issue anyone has had.

But don't worry, you'll never have to deal with this as you'll never have CarPlay/AA in your vehicle so I guess that's good for you.(cabpatch)

As the others have stated obvious troll is obvious. Moving on.

Suffice to say that the lack CarPlay and AA isn't turning buyers away. It's not a show stopper for me, and BMW just started with CarPlay in 2017.

Lets not act like it's "been around forever"

Aye Mango con MIERDA! Do you even ask yourself if what you're planning to write is logically defensible before you start clacking away at your keyboard?

Fgs, this thread is about the new CX-5. Snap out of it children, were not bloody interested in whether you have some downer on the brand.

Anybody got any new info on the new CX-5?

Just look at that swoop!

Agreed. The only scenario I would consider trading that swoop is when 2018+ CX5s finally have these fixes:
1. resurrecting live traffic
2. adding mute button on steering wheel (ideally between volume +/- buttons, like the way the INFO button is sandwiched between up/down arrows), it's ridiculous one can control the volume but cannot mute quickly
3. have rain sensor control rear wiper, not just windshield (don't even need additional rain sensor), again, it's stupid having to manually turn on rear wiper while front ones are auto

plus a few more...

Yess, better control of the rear wiper would be nice. I just noticed that there is a "continuous" setting. I have never needed that before. I think the intermittent is still too fast.

I am really curious about the seat warmers and if they improved them.

The new look is slowly growing on me but thankfully it doesn't knock off the current gen imo. I would like to test drive one but I know I am going to want one lol

I was just using the rear wiper. I think it's fine the way it is. And Mute, too. I don't think I've ever had mute on a car before, so even having it on this one is a treat. It's in a pretty good spot as is, imo. I rarely use volume controls on the steering wheel. You could take them away for all I care. LOL We are all different. ;)

jhu8,7eregrine: admittedly none of the features I've listed is critical, just nice to have. To be honest the 2017 model is very nice, not perfect but good enough for me to be jealous and buyer remorseful, and I feel happy for others who've decided to go ahead. :)
