2004-2006 Era 17" Mazda 3 Wheels on 2018 CX-5?

I just picked up a 2018 CX-5. I have the OEM wheels from our old 2005 Mazda3 still. Could we use them on the CX-5 for winters? I'm thinking too narrow?

Specs from the Mazda3 wheels:
Bolt pattern - 5x114.3
Size - 17-inch
Width - 6.5 inches
Offset - 52.5mm

Specs (I think) from 2018 CX-5
Bolt pattern - 5x114.3
Size - 19-inch
Width - 7 inches
Offset - 45mm? 50mm?

The width of OE CX-5 17" and 19" wheels are 7", both offsets are 50 mm. Most 225/65R17 tires can be used on 6~8" rim width. Although your old Mazda3 rims are not perfectly match the CX-5's OE 17" wheels, and I personally wouldn't use them, but the differences are minimum and I'd say it should be find to use them.

The 2.5mm difference isn't going to matter at all. It will slightly tuck the wheels a bit further in, which will actually help with road slush not being thrown up the side of the car. The slightly narrower width won't matter at all. A 225/65R17 will mount up just fine to that rim. Go ahead and use them.

Thanks for the confirmation everyone. Any thoughts on moving to a 215/65 R17? It's about 1.8% smaller compared to 225/65. The advantages I see are, price is about $20 less per tire compare to the 225/65, and the marginally thinner tire might give slightly better snow traction. Anybody run that size or do you feel the size difference is too great?

Hard to see, but here it is on the 3's wheels. No issues at all - just the glorious roar of winter rubber. Stock sized rubber. This angle actually shows the minimal tuck with the different offset - there were no running issues at all other than these ones not having TPS sensors in them.



Smaller size will function just fine, but will also overdrive your ODO and speedo by the same amount. And you're maintenance and warranty will be due 1.8% sooner (if going by mileage). If you're good with that, have at it. If not - stick with stock size. 10mm thinner isn't going to make that much difference.

I did run slightly undersized tires on my 2017 Mazda 3 because I already had them from my 2010 Mazda 3 and they were nearly new when the 2010 was written off. I accepted the ~2 or 3% difference and got on with life. If I was buying new for the car I would've bought the right size.

I don't see any reason to stray from the stock size on the 17" diameter for winters if you're buying them at anything less than a significant discount - but that's just me.
