How to: Evenly light gauges w/LEDs

Ok well after a lot of trial and error I have found a way to light the gauges evenly using LEDs. If anyone has tried swapping out there regular bulb lights for LEDs they probably know the lighting isnt even. So here is how you fix that problem

1. Head over to http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=ACCENTS and buy yourself a line of LEDs. They look like this, they are for motorcycles but are 12v so it works for us.

They come in a bunch of colors, I chose red.

2. I seperated the wire into 4 sets of 2 by yanking the wire out of one side of the LED. I did this so it would be easier to position behind the gauges.

3. You now need to take apart the gauge cluster. You can find out how to do that here: http://www.msprotege.com/vbb225/showthread.php?t=48154 (Note: You dont have to take it completely apart only up to this step.

3. When you have your gauge cluster at the step above you want to start placing the LED string. Each LED comes with double sided tape on the back so just peel it off and stick. But watch out because the tape is very strong and once you stick it, it wont stick again if you pull it off. After about 2 or 3 tries I found this setup was the best.

Notce there are only 3 sets of 2 leds there. This is because I used the 4th set on the P R N D 2 1 thing cause I have an automatic. You can use the 4th set for whatever.

4. Next you want to take out the twisty thing that holds the stock gauge lights in place. Feed the ends of each set of LEDs through the closest hole. Strip the ends and solder them in place.

Above I marked which side is positive and which is negative.

5. Now before you put your gauge cluster back together plug it in to make sure all the LEDs light up. If not you probably soldered the wires wrong. Once you make sure everything lights up put your gauge cluster back together and reinstall it.

6. Now sit back and admire your brighter evenly lit gauges. (thumb)

Sorry about the bluriness of the picture but I took it at night without a flash and I didnt have my tripod. But you can easily tell the LEDs looks beautiful.

awesome work Rism!!! (bowdown)

something i can do in the winter...only wish i would have known about this 80 dollars in LEDs ago..

very nice Rism (thumb)

wonder if it's possible to make a reverse gauge look of sorts with two different colors. next to reverse gauges that's the nicest gauge cluster at night I've seen

Thanks, Ill try and get a better picture of the gauges at night.

The only problem I ran into while lighting the gauges is the orange overlay the put on the white face gauges. Thats why the stock lights give you a orange/red look. I tried using white LEDs on the gauges but it just came out yellowish due to that orange overlay they have. I havent tried any other color so I dont know what will happen. With red LEDs you will get a true red though.

Next im gonna be lighting just the needles probably with white LEDs.

I agree! This thread would have been nice to have when I was experimenting lighting up my gauges and console with LEDs.

heres a pic from a while back.

i snap some pics after it gets dark, everything but the cruise, CEL, and seatbelt lights is blue definitely need the string for side brightness

either really, i want to know excatly how the blue shows through the green
The black face gauges dont have a overlay like the white faced ones. Im pretty sure you could do any color combination you want with those gauges. However like i was saying the white faced gauges have a orange overlay on them itself that I dont think you can get off. So no matter whta color LEDs you put it will mix with the orange overlay and make a different color. This of course is a theory since I have only tried white and red LEDs.

the black faces in my 99LX have a green tint in the gauge face itself.
it affected any colored bulb or led I put in the cluster

awesome man, do you have a larger pic? i would like to see it in a bit better detail

thanks!

pics as promised. The two behind the speedo are the superbrightled 5 way which helped alot for brightness and clarity. The sides are the flat tipped single leds which are also in the hvac controls. The turns signals are white but required sanding on the gauge overlay, i have a gauge bezel so you cant see that the indicators are actually circles.

Going to get a couple of the led strings and try it out in the hvac as well.

once again thanks for the idea Rism (headbang)
