93 Mazda Protege
ok, so i've got this idea, and apparently it's not too original. I'd like to swap out my old SOHC engine with automatic transmission for a GTR. My understanding is that i need the GTR engine itself, a manual transmission to match (from another 93 protege, DOHC). If anyone out there has done this swap, i'd really like to hear about any little problems that i might encounter, either with the transmission swap or the engine swap. stuff like: wiring that will have to change, gears that don't match, will my computer recognize all the new stuff i'm doing? also, anything that i should just KNOW before i do the swap.

thanks

thanks, i've got a few places where i can buy the engine. what i need to know are those unexpected problems that you inevitably encounter when changing something this major. i appreciate your input, cap'n

You're looking at a lot of work. I myself just bought a 5-speed LX to not deal with the transmission swap. Much easier that way.

good luck finding a GTR motor...i believe only 500 were ever produced. you'll find GTX motors more readily. difference between the two is GTR is 210bhp, GTX is 180bhp.

Yeah, it will. Plenty of capability, really. I might have one myself... (angel) I just thought you were trying to show nonameheroes that GTRs are easy to find. Nah. Not HARD to find, but a waste of money for those, IMO.

just got my 93 protege

i wanted to no after reading some post i need a diif. engine i have 1.8 sohc manual trans. need some knowlege any one???

or you just get a junkyard motor 1.8BP, find them under escort GTs and their are usually much less..i had a 93 protege and did the DOHC swap, after looking into the GTX/GTR swap.. these motor where built for turbos etc, same as the miata..i have friends here in the miata club that have been running 8-10 psi all day for 8 -10 years on those motors.. which is really all the gtx/gtr motor is (slap a turbo on) i think you can get the greddy turbo kit for $1200 and run 8 psi.. if you add the intercooler you be making about 180-200 hp
heres some OLD pics of her (enduro rally style bitches)

dam i miss that car.. a junk car is what you need.. tranny,ecu,axles,brakes,motor.. i rember these for sure, also the pedals and plastic trimfor the shifter and all the shifter linkage etc if you swap from an auto tranny.. its a big job

the benefit of doing an entire gtx swap is that you are getting a better intake manifold, turbo cams, all required lines and fittings, lower compression pistons etc.

the downside is that the gtx head has a lump in the intake passageway. this lump helps keep low end torque up, but if you are building a drag car or have a larger than stock turbocharger then the n/a bp head is a great bolt on for the gtx motor.

check out the forced induction section of feoa.net for more info on gtx swaps etc.

That, or he can just get a GTR intake manifold. They are different on the inside then the GTX. Much freer routing then the GTX. Also, theres various companies that import engines from Japan, one of which being CS can hunt one down and import it for you. If the GTR engine is thus important to you. To me, it would be. Great advantage of power, and if your throwing it into an AWD, then you have a transmission that can handle the abuse.
