Where does the 2nd Gen CX-9 pull air in for the stock intake?

I have a 2016 Mazda CX-9 and was looking at the design of the stock air intake. I see the scoop when you open the hood but when you look at the design of the hood when it's closed I don't see how outside air is flowing into the intake. Reason I asked is I just replaced my air filter after 15,000 miles and it was not that dirty. Where else would it pull outside air from?

It's going to go in the opening in the air box. No place else since ALL air needs to go through the filter. You don't need a big space for air...usually just a spot away from heat.

The airbox is up-flow; the bottom of the filter catches the dirt. The bottom of the airbox has a snorkel that goes up to the sill at the top of the grill. The airflow is through the grill, up and through the space around the hood latch, right to the rectangular opening into the snorkel, then down into the airbox. Kind'a convoluted but indeed a cold air intake.
