Upsized Tires Thread 16" and 17"

:
2019 CX-5 AWD
I would like to know what factory 16" OEM wheels in the 5x4.5/5x114.3 bolt pattern will fit the CX-5 sport/touring/grand touring with or without hubcentric rings, or what upsized tires fit on the standard 17" wheels. (You could also run a different 17" wheel, but I already have a set of those). The 2.5T models use a larger brake caliper so 17s are the smallest that fit, but these models have room for 16s. I ran OEM Acura RSX 5-spoke (64.1mm hub bore) wheels, same 16" size as stock, on my ES 330 (60.1mm hub bore) with 60.1 > 64.1mm rings. Perfect ride quality. The Mazda CX-5's hub bore is 67.1mm so the Acura wheels would not fit unless bored out, so those are a no go. However, from what I can tell, Hyundai 5x4.5 alloys are a perfect fit for center bore and very close for offset. No hubcentric rings or spacers neccessary. There are also Mazda 16" alloys that could fit. They are both available handily for cheap on Craigslist. Lighter wheel and bigger tire = better ride. Yep, I don't care about the wheels looking small, I care more about how it rides. Plus, there are actually some nice looking factory 16" alloys.

The other option is to stick with the factory 17" alloys and upsize the tire. There's not a lot of room in the wheel wells, so I think 235/65/17 is big as I would upsize from the standard 225/65/17 tire. But I will still be on the lookout for those 16" Hyundai or Mazda wheels on Craigslist if I can find one cheap and clean enough to test.

On my previous 2013 LX 570, I changed from 20" cast wheels to lighter OEM Toyota forged 17" wheels. P285/50/20 > LT285/70/17. Big improvement in ride quality and noise over the 20" wheels from the larger tires and lighter wheels. With a heavier tire, they were 10 lbs lighter each than the standard factory wheels/tires.

Anyone who has upsized tires knows that sometimes you have to massage the wheel wells or fender liners. This can be as simple as using a heat gun (or even a hair dryer) and pushing out the plastic, or using cable ties to pull the fender liner forward.

Anyone upsized tires on their CX-5? Anyone running 235/65/17? 10mm wider tires and just a little more sidewall (only .2") would be very interesting.

I think even the center cap is the same size.

Perfect, thanks. There are quite a few wheels that will fit.

I'd still like to know if anyone has run 235s.
