New CX-9 Touring 2019 - Interior noises - Please Help

:
CX-9
Hi guys,

New to this forum as I have just purchased a new CX 9 2019 Touring, literally 10 days ago.

Love everyting in the car which has only 300 klms - need help with one small thing which is annoying and would love to hear from anyone that has experienced the same / similar issue, i have started noticing some creaking noises coming from what appears to be somewhere behind / side of the drivers seat and similar creaking from the dashboard when the car goes over road surface indentations or rough patches.

As the car is brand new the dealer asked me to mention this to the techs at the 1000 klm or one month from purchase (whicever comes first ) inspection.

Could anyone please offer any insight as to what this issue could be, where are these creaking sounds could be coming from?

Greatly appreciate any feedback/ advise and if their is any known solution as I am going crazy being a new car and supposedly very refined interior an a quite one ( owned a CX 9 2013 and expect the interior rattles which drove me mental and the wife saying that I had to be treated for OCD and whatnot it was not a bad car).

Looking forward to hear from anyone who could assist.

Thanking everyone in advance.

Check to make sure you don't have any loose objects in the glove box. Creaking seat could just mean that the rails need more grease or something. If you really wanted to try to resolve it before the 1k inspection, it's very easy to empty the glove box and remove it to see if that's the problem. You could also move the driver's seat all the way back and all the way forward a couple of times, maybe check for loose screws while you're down there, and regrease the rails.

Check your sunglass holder and remove them if present, then test again...Hope this helps.

Peace and blessings,

Azeke

Hi Sm1ke & Azeke,

Guys thanks for your replies and feedback, I have done both recommendations however nothing has changed, the car is booked for the one month / 1000 klm inspection tomorrow morning (Sydney time).

I also received a call from Mazda Australia yesterday where I advised them of my griefs and said that they will be sending a note to the service centre advising them of these issues.

Let's hope that they will be able to hear what I hear and find a solution as it is very hard loving your brand new car when the interior that surrounds you sounds like a 5 yr old car..

I will post once the inspection has finished.

Thank you & be well.

Hi guys,

Hope you are all well.

As said the other day the car was taken for the 1000klm inspection to Mazda yesterday and the interior noises were reported, one of the techs took a ride with me to replicate / hear the noises and the noises were there. Reported this to the Manager and the car was left for the day.

Upon returning to collect the Manager took me to the car and advised that the had recorded the noise on camera and send it to Mazda Australia who surprise surprise said the car was fine and that the noise was from the window tinting, rear windows, done by the dealership prior purchasing the car, tebtech guys were not convinced however to prove the point they removed the tinting drove the car the noise (recorded again) was still present, when this was reported again to Mazda Aus they said the car will need to undergo repairs something the tech Manager was not willing to do /start there and then.

Took the car, he said drive it over the wend and call me Monday however I am sure that it still has the noise - he was right the noise is there - so need to call back on Monday and continue...

Tech Manager Chris was fantastic and showed real care for this issue and how troubled I was by it.

Having owned previously a CX 9 13 I am familiar with interior noises and how you hear them on the right and come from the back etc however no matter what, and the tech we did the test drive with agreed and reported that it appears to be coming from drivers door & or dashboard area so it will be very interesting how next week prosgresses as I feel heavy hearted right now that a brand new car will most likely be the subject of search & find what / where the noise is coming from.

Once I have any news i will post an update and in the mean time would greatly appreciate any feedback that could be helpful in this case, anyone that any similar issues please assist.

Take care guys.

To be clear - are they saying that the tint was physically causing the creaking? Or are they saying that disassembling then reassembling the interior door skin to install the tint is whats causing your issue?

Can you post the video of the noise here? I'm interested to hear just how bad it is.

Keep in mind that nothing is ever perfect. The noise is abnormal for sure, but in the grand scheme of things, it isn't the end of the world, and certainly not something to ditch the CX-9 over.

Hi guys,

Firstly thank you for your replies.

Re what Mazda Aus saying about the noise culprit - the tint itself or the works to have the tinting done, my understanding is the tint as the techs removed it gave it another try where again the same noise was present - obviously need to confirm with he techs when I return the car to them on Tuesday.

Re video of the noise - I will request this from the service manager to get it on my phone so I can upload here.

Couple of things to mention, honestly I strongly believe that the noise I am reffering to has its origins somewhere in the front, that be the dashboard or its surrounds (trims etc where a clip or fastener(s) are loose which I guess can happen - have seen sometime ago a post with pictures that one owner had removed the long skinny trim which starts from the passenger side and ends near the Start / Stop button where it had rubbing markings plastic with plastic at the end - felt tape solved this however i cannot through searches find this post) or even the plastics that make contact witht the windscreen from the engine compartment area (seen couple of similar posts in this forum).

Love the car guys and no way I am ditching it - no way, my only aim is to have a quite interior, nothing is perfect, like other 9's 17, 18 & 19 as i have driven few inside valet car parks ( that's how I pay the bills) and going over speed humps they are quite as pussy cats and definetely they do not have the noise that I get - one of the reasons I traded the 13 for the 19.

Will update again once I have news.

Take care guys.

Not sure if you have the same issue...by my 2017 had a hard to diagnose noise in the same area over bumps, and after 3 visits to the dealer, they discovered that it has some loose bolts/nuts around the wiper blade motor assembly. They had to remove the plastic cowl cover in order to see all the bolts. They re-torqued everything there and the car has been very quiet since then. You may be able to do this at home with some basic tools.

Take care guys.

Yesterday, my 2018 started making noises when going over patches of rough road. My wife was in the car and she could tell which general area it was coming from.

When we stopped in a parking lot, I slammed the glove box door and was able to duplicate the issue. Turns out it was a climate vent on the far right hand side of the dash. I put pressure on the edges of it and the rattle disappeared.

This was a new noise and started after 20k miles. Other than the occasional hanging seat belt getting turned around and tapping against the a seat, the car has been very quiet.

Hi danmm7,

Thanks for your feedback regarding what issue you had and how it was resolved.

Spoke today with the service guys and have said that Mazda has informed them that they had another car with same / similar noises reported so the tech said that they will need the car for couple of days in order to run few tests so I will drop it of in the morning.

I will update the forum once news are available.

Thanks again fornyour support guys and hopefully I will have some good news to report.

Hi guys,

No real updates at this stage as the Mazda service centre have this tech coming from interstate this Friday to have a look at the car and hopefully diagnose and rectify the noise.

According to the service centre this tech is flown around Australia and assists in identifying and solving issues that are not that common, fingers & toes crossed he will also figure this one out.

I will post an update once news are on hand.

Interior noises are a real pain in the a$$ to find. I had a Ford station wagon that I bought for my winter go-to-work car. At a certain engine rpm, it would produce a buzz inside the car that drove me nuts. I could drive through it by changing the rpm and I could very easily reproduce it just sitting in my driveway if I throttled to that rpm range. I went for rides with my wife in the front seat, the rear seat and had it running in the driveway, producing the buzz while she looked in the rear of the wagon and even under the hood. Could not find it. I swore it was coming from the front passenger area, when she was sitting in the passenger seat she swore it was coming from the front drivers door area or under the dash. We totally emptied the car but the hunt for the buzz went on for several weeks.

Know what it turned out to be? The plastic sunglass holder compartment door mounted in the ceiling. Cheap plastic that when closed, was just loose enough to vibrate at a certain engine rpm as the car vibrated. I took a heat gun to it to reshape it a mm or so as to put tension on it when in the closed position and viola, the buzz was completely gone.

Had another issue on a diff car with a strange noise that sounded like there were marbles bouncing around in a tin can under the car. It only happened when I would go over certain types of bumps. I crawled under the car, removed the plastic protection but couldn't see anything abnormal. Thinking that maybe it might be a U-joint-Guibo, I taped my iPhone to the underside of the car, facing the U-joint and started it in video mode and then took the car around the block. I heard the noise a few times during that drive but when checking out the video, the U-joint and surrounding area was perfect.

I finally gave up and took it to the dealer against my better judgement but didn't want to keep driving it due to the way it sounded. Turns out that a couple of weeks prior, I had the transfer case replaced on my car and the dealer who did that, forgot to tighten one of the three bolts securing it to the car. That one nut vibrated complete off the bolt thereby allowing the bolt to bounce around within its location. The bolt itself could not fall out like the nut did because it was too long to make it completely out of its housing but it sure did bounce enough to make a lot of noise.

Ok, these probably aren't your issue but just to demonstrate how hard noises can be to locate. For me, I would spend the time to try and find it as opposed to the dealer because I don't like being without my car and I really don't like dealers crawling through my cars, they fix one thing, cause another. I wish you the best of luck and will await learning what caused your noise.

Hi guys,

It has been a while to write and share how did this interior noise issue go.

Around mid Nov 19 and after contacting Corp Mazda over and over again a Mazda Field tech specialist was assigned to test drive the car with me - i say this as the same FTS had "looked" and test drove the car without me so he had no idea what he was looking for (not his fault).

We met and i took him to the roads that i knew the noise would be heard - and so it did, he noted the noise and agreed that their is something not right somewhere..

He arranged a loaner, a new Mazda 6, for me and i left the car with them (this arrangement took another week or so).

I also reported the drivers seat been wobbly which they recorded on their books.

Two weeks from the drop off date i was told the car was ready, below is a quote of what their report stated:

"Noise was coming from wiper cowl - upon testing bolts torque they were found loose by a quarter turn - TFS instructed bolts to be loosened completely and and torque to correct spec".

Car was tested and there was no noise to report.

Happy & quiet days ahead as it was always meant to be!!

Re the drivers seat - the base somehow was faulty - try figure this one out - and needed to be replaced however as the car was new this part had to be ordered - imported outside Australia, happy to say that they have called me just shy from Christmas Day and the part has arrived - taking the car in for the seat base to be fitted this Tuesday.

One issue remains which i will bring to their attention - not sure what they have removed or not however the middle dashboard speaker (plastic cover) rattles when going over certain surfaces - i am sure that some foam would resolve this as it does not sound that bad however i will leave it for them to sort out.

On this note Thank you to all who have shared their knowledge and experience and have tried to assist - lets hope that all is smooth sailing ahead.

PS, i have the wiper cowl noise recorded on my phone - quality not bad - and if anyone faces, hopefully not, any noise issue please let me know how to upload the video and i will do so - anything that could help a fellow 9 owner.

Great to hear that they were able to sort out the noise and seat issues! Sounds like you've got a great dealer to work with, which is becoming more and more rare these days (especially here in North America).

Sad to say the problems continue, noises in the interior are back - 99% it is the same noise i.e wiper cowl plate loose bolts, the drivers seat which they changed the base only few months ago rocks again (back part) like a rocking chair... heard and recorded by Mazda service centre.

The same rocking issue is developing on the passengers side seat where it appears to be loose or something and produces rattles & creaks whilst on uneven roads - when the seat is occupied nothing is heard.

The plastics of the HVAC creaking like mad, tried some silicone spray with no difference as obviously it cannot reach the clips etc..

All of these issues have been reported to the Mazda dealer / service centre who after trying couple of times with foams etc to block the noises, thsinks only couple of months ago, (including the dashboard middle grill speaker - no sleaker there really ..) they gave up and logged a job internally with Mazda, had the car last week there for the first 10K service and they written on the report all these concerns and once COVID-19 is over Mazda will assign one of their specialists to come down to Sydney and road test the car (techs are not allowed to travel during COVID).

Almost 1 year old car and have to admit that long ago now my new car experience had gone out the window..

Sorry to hear about all the issues you're having. I remember my wife's G35 coupe had a driver seat making creaking/rattling/popping sounds - the seat itself seemed secure but it was pretty annoying. Infiniti tried all sorts of things and nothing really worked - lubing components, replacing seat rails, and eventually the entire seat itself. None of it helped by we did solve the probably when we bought a different car... :)

Anyway, good luck getting your issues resolved!

Thanks AWE46M3,

Waiting now for Corp Mazda to reopen in Melbourne, assign a tech and go from there.

On another note could anyone know where I can get my hands on a Service Manual for the CX 9 2019?

Appreciate any tips
