Paint defect? Covered by warranty?

:
2019 CX-9 GT AWD in Soul Red
4 weeks in and I think I'm bringing the car in for warranty. I noticed a white blemish which I thought was just dirt along the back edge of the hood, and after washing the car and feeling it my worst fear was confirmed.

The paint is chipping, and on the deepest portion it is down to the bare metal. Honestly do not know how this happened, other than this has to be a defect from factory.

Bringing the car in this week to see dealer's opinion. Do you guys think this is a warranty-covered issue? I'm afraid they'd say yes and offer a repaint or touch up, but I'm going to push for a hood replacement (because we all know Soul Red is very hard to match).

That looks bad. As much as I love the soul red paint, it does not seem durable at all.

Very odd because I have a paint chip in the exact same area. Don't even know how a rock chip could possibly get that area.

If the warranty covers paint then the warranty should cover your issue. Also, I think you are right to "push for a hood replacement" because I doubt an aftermarket paint job of your existing hood will match the rest of your CX-5.

Looks like a scrape, not a chip, to me. But how could that happen?

Looks like what happens when you open the hood while the wipers are pulled away from the windshield.

Ahh yes, this is indeed what has happened. I looked at the wipers after reading this comment and there was a scratch under.

Now I have only opened the hood twice the entire time I have had the car, and none of it was during the wipers were up. We'll see what the dealer says.

Worst outcome: I eat the cost of getting this touched up somehow.

Sigh.

That's very odd if that did chip off by itself, on a back facing surface. Are you absolutely certain the hood wasn't lifted with the wiper arm up? It does line up.

Also, is it possible you hit it with an ice scraper. That's a spot vulnerable to ice scrapers.

Just shooting out possible causes because it does look more like a scrape vs paint flaking off due to a defect.

Also, when the factory replaces a panel, don't they usually send it unpainted? It might depend but this is my understanding. Perhaps they do ship it painted but it would require very special care.

Update: as I expected, dealer said they can't prove where it happened and who did it, and basically told me "good luck!"

So I ordered touch up paint from Europe. It comes in 2 small bottles, one for paint and one for clear, as opposed to the pen type that is sold by Mazda USA. Downside is it takes a few weeks to get here. In the meantime I'll ask around body shops and see what it'll cost to repair.

You don't think you can dab the touch up paint on yourself?

I didn't mean the body shop will do the touch up paint, I can do that myself. But if the body shop repair is relatively cheap I'd rather have it done professionally.

I just do not see it being worth removing the hood and having it sanded, primed, resprayed with the 4 layers of paint, to get it reattached and to try and match the color of the rest of the factory painted panels for your paint scrape.

Agreed, that's an easy spot to touch up and barely notice unless you're really looking for it.
