Mazda CX-5 Akera AWD high fuel consumption after 200 km

Good day, All.
I have noticed that after each 200 km my istop system becomes unavailable and diesel consumption goes up significantly for 20 km. After that istop becomes available and consumption drops to norm. Even if I go downhill and usually consumption is 0L, in this mode it still eats 3l/100km without me pressing on the pedal... And like that all the time. I even can feel the engine is working harder. I assume it has something to do with particulate matter filter cleaning itself but can't find anything in manual, forums or even at the dealer. I see a clear pattern. Did anybody else have it? What can be the cause and how to fix it?

What you are experiencing is the diesel particulate filter regeneration cycle.

Perfectly normal, and as you say, the main indications are the green iStop light goes off and the engine note changes, along with increased fuel used. The cycle is not a distance thing, its a time thing in terms of how long the cycle takes to complete the regen process.

I wont go into lots more detail, as you can easily google it.

But basically, diesel is being injected into the exhaust to increase the temp in the DPF and burn off soot particulate deposits. Mazda has sensors in the DPF that detect back pressure and when it reaches a preset level due to particulate accumulation, the regen cycle is initiated.

Its part of the engine emissions system and cannot be turned off.

More particulate matter accumulates if you use poor quality fuel, and if you do more short stop start trips eg city driving. A good run on the highway for at least 30 minutes every couple of weeks helps.

The other critical factor is the engine oil specs. You MUST use a full synth low sulphur engine oil that fully meets the specs as per the handbook. Never use anything else, you risk engine damage and destroying the DPF, both very expensive and non warranty claimable.

You can also try running a good quality DPF cleaner in the fuel tank every 5000kms, but make sure it includes a bimetallic platinum & cerium catalyst, they reportedly are the best.

DPF regen for 2.2L diesel on gen-2 CX-5 happens much less frequently than your gen-1 CX-5 according to Anchorman from UK.
