AWD activation

Then set it to play in slow-mo. It's 2 simple clicks. I can take a 240fps video tomorrow if you like, also, if that isn't sufficient, but I think it should be.

If you take another video, show the passenger side. The rear passenger side tire may have gotten power. The driver's side seems to allow some differential for turning. Better yet if you have two cameras have one on each side.

Yep. Now I see it. The rear definitely lags the front a tiny bit.
Couldn't it be both proactive and reactive? Maybe nothing else triggered it. What was the temp? I doubt the awd is on everytime the wipers are on.

It*s on an uphill slope on gravel. The weight is all transferred to the rear and there is little weight on the front. This isn*t a geared drive system, it is a tiny multi plate clutch and there may be some breakaway slip to save destroying the rear diff. It is possible to break open the rear axle by trying to drive against the handbrake so it is a good job there is.
 
-Up hill 17* incline (27 % grade)
-Wipers on
-Floored it (and tq braked it!)
-TCS off
-It was 55*F

If you watch the video closely, it's easy to see the front tires spinning for the first foot or so, before the rear tires spin slightly and the vehicle then hooks up. Were the AWD fully engaged initially, the rears would have spun much sooner, and more significantly, especially as there was less weight over the rear-end at the instant of take-off (before it shifted rearward). This video proves my point in a way that matters beyond the mental masturbation of the internet, and translates into the real world.

Why did you turn the traction control off? Perhaps it behaves differently with TC on. Could it be the TC that sends the signal to rear wheel clutch and activates them when front wheels have less traction. Generally speaking, I believe in what you are saying since I see it happening on our drive way with partially hard surface and partially gravel. After each drive I have to go back and sweep the gravel from the hard surface, that the front wheels had sprayed on it. In spite of the T C being on.

Because people on this forum said "It locks it when you turn it off!" I mean, there is so much talk about "how to lock your diff" here it's crazy, so I did all the things rumored on this forum to lock it.

The drive-way is loose rock over dirt, it's just been compacted down by driving over it. No concrete, etc. under there, just for clarity.

I did all I could to "lock my diff" per this forum. Wipers, 27 percent grade, TC "off", all I had left to me was temp, and I can't influence that one. I was responding directly to the person who seemed to think that "The AWD is always engaged from a stop". Nah, not so much. The system is on and monitoring, like I said, it is not "engaged" in a meaningful way.

I wouldn't know. I torquebraked it. I didn't touch the handbrake.
 
It's like, so much voodoo on this forum. Everyone is now stumbling all over themselves t o explain how I did the wrong magic to "lock the diff". A few months ago, the technique was "turn TC off and the wipers on", now it's "wipers and be going up hill, but leave TC on". Mindnumbing. If it's so damn hard to "lock the diff", you'll never punch in the right combo in time! Just accept that it's a wonderful REACTIVE system on take-off.
 
One thing done in video I cannot recall every doing myself is brake torquing from a launch. I have used brakes already underway on dicey terrain but never from a stop.

I was very very gentle with this, as it's my DD, and it's not meant for racing and the converter is very tight for the sake of fuel efficiency, however, I wanted a bit more INSTANT torque to emphasize wheel spin vs. flashing it off the line.
 
I know what it is...it is just a scenario that I do not recall ever seeing one try in a AWD test here.

Curious to see if different results just dropping hammer.....

For all we know it could be a sensor override that affects operation of rear diff from a stop. One could prove or disprove this with Forscan.

Honestly, the only way you'd know what was going on is if you'd have something like the Forscan app hooked up which will give you an actual readout of the torque distribution. It could be that you are actually right, but an actual readout would be more credible than your driveway test.

Agreed. However, the vehicle DID hook up, eventually ( after a few feet), so it seems likely that power was indeed ultimately sent to the rear tires, just not "engaged from the start", which was all I set out to prove.

It'd not an actual 50/50 split, is it? I thought more was still being pumped to the front, which would explain the spin.
 

Yeah, somehow the figure 17% stuck with me for some reason or another, but it's not 50% immediately. By the way, I share your experience, plenty of times I had to pull into an intersection on wet roads and there was always a momentary spin initially which led me to believe there was never an even split. I still find the system remarkable in a raging snowstorm.

Oh, it's a good system, it's just reactive to slip and not proactive against slip on take-off. For it to truly be proactive, it would have to be engaged ALL of the time, and 2% is just to keep the slop out. But people like CX-500 need video proof and all that.
