P5 alternator replacement gone wrong

:
2002 Mazda Protege5
Hey everyone, I recently replaced my alternator and when I started up the car after the repair it shredded the alternator belt. I am replacing the belt tomorrow and I want to make sure I don't make the same mistake again that lead to the belt shredding. Can anyone give me some tips on how to make sure my belt is on there properly and at the correct tension? I decided to go ahead and replace both belts seeings I have to remove the outer one to access the alternator drive belt so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also what is a good brand of belt to purchase?

I always liked Gates belts.

It should be fairly tight, but not TOO tight so you can play it like a banjo. However, overtightening the belt wouldn't shred it, it will ruin the alternator though. If yours shredded it was probably installed wrong like not being all the way on one of the pulleys, aligned in the grooves, or something of that nature. That one rides on the rear of the crank pulley so i'd guess it was probably misaligned there.
