Once rented a Sienna from Hertz from NorCal to SoCal and return:
Miles Gal MPG
336 14.96 22.46 (loaded)
271.1 11.91 22.76 (more in town drive)
336.4 15.62 21.54

Bought Mazda 5 with about 86k Auto from dealer - did tranny flushed and wheel aligned
Miles Gal MPG
338.3 11.652 29.03
255.9 10.652 24.02 (more in town drive)
339 14.38 23.57 (loaded)

Mazda 5 Oil change is approaching
Miles Gal MPG
343.5 11.89 28.89 (loaded)
255.9 10.868 23.55
352.2 12.318 28.59

It appears Sienna MPG did not fluctuate a lot on a same route.
You guys see anything in these data that I might be missing - perhaps opportunity to increase MPG?

Note:

"Loaded" means the 3rd row seat on M5 was folded and bags/stuff were loaded all the way up with some visibility via the rear view mirror.

Larger engine in the Sienna has to work less than the smaller engine and less advanced transmission in the 5. You're about as good as it's going to get in the 5.

What would be a better upgrade to Mazda 5? CR-V? CR-V has smaller luggage space right compared to M-5 with the 3rd row folded down?

CX-5? It kinda depends if you need the 3 row seating or not.
Sinenna would be a real upgrade to 5 as it still has the 3 seating and extra space.

What Vasy said. If you need the space of a minivan, get a minivan. If the 5 has the space you need - and you want better fuel economy - get a CX-5 or CRV. That said, keep in mind that you're spending money to get that fuel economy, so think about your return on investment.
