Mazda 3 starts like crap, idles too high.

2005 Mazda 3
My 2005 Mazda 3 with 298k miles starts terribly and doesn't want to start. Then, when I get it to start it idles at 2700 to 3000. Any ideas? I have no clue what to do to this thing.

It may be a large vacuum leak. That's the first thing I'd check with a vacuum gauge. This happened a while back with my Protg. The rubber accordion intake snorkel split on its underside, causing the engine to stumble and idle at high RPM. I temporarily used duct tape to seal the leak, allowing me to drive the car home. Once I installed the new part, everything was back to normal.
