Unnecessary spark plug replacement?

Yep, I do believe the Mazda Moly Oil is made by Idemitsu if I recall correctly?

As for the spark plugs, don't see any reason to believe these aren't the NGK plugs at this point, and no evidence has been provided to the contrary, so...

Yes, the mazda oil is made by idemitsu... you cannot buy the equivalent from anywhere else, it's a proprietary formulation... the idemitsu sold elsewhere has a different formulation and is inferior to the mazda labeled one
lab test results proves this

Yep, not meant to imply otherwise.

The spark plugs feel different though as the Mazda ones I purchased possess the NGK part number. I doubt the Mazda Moly oil shares the same product number/code as a regular Idemitsu branded oil for that reason. They are different.

Replaced my spark plugs today. Was super easy to do, but the extension kept coming off the spark plug socket after torqueing the spark plug in place. Improvised with some electrical tape and then no further problems.

Here's some pics of the old plugs. They are the PE5S models. I'll put all 4 in a pic when I get a chance.

Even wearing gloves ves. Look at this pro. [emoji1]
(rofl)

Ashamed to admit it, but the inside of my engine bay is filthy and needs to be cleaned. I had heard though that the power sprayer was a bad idea, so consider it laziness. So the gloves kept my hands clean lol.

I was being nice. I was going to call you "Princess". Doesn't want to get his hands dirty! Hehe. Luv ya buddy. [emoji16]

How many miles on those plugs CD?
67,855

And driving today, holy crap. Huge difference in my acceleration from stop. Car feels like it did brand new again and I didn't even realize.

Thanks for the pics of the plug porn.(humpleg)

What is ND's part number printed on those PE5S plugs?

Did you use metric 14mm or 9/16" spark plug socket?

Although we're not supposed to re-gap, but did you double check the gap of your new OEM spark plugs making sure they're consistent?

9/16. I ordered a 14mm on amazon but they screwed up the shipping. Went to the local auto parts store, brought a spark plug with me and the 9/16 fit just fine. A little snug, but it fit. The extension just didn't seem to hold the tightest and the spark plug was a bit snug. Just did that electrical tape wrap and no further problems.

No I did not check that. Didn't know I needed to.

My Spark Plug change experience

OK, so I went ahead and did the spark plug change. 61,740 miles and a month shy of 5 years since I picked her up new at the dealer.

Short version: CX-5 was running just fine, changed the plugs, no problems and it idles a little bit smoother now. No discernible performance difference.

Long version:

First of all, I bought the NKG plugs through Amazon. $54.77/tax delivered. They've dropped a couple of bucks since then.

Then I bought a 14mm elongated spark plug socket. It's from Baum Tools out of Florida, but ordered through Amazon. $13.95 delivered (no tax). This socket worked perfectly both getting the old ones out and putting the new ones in. The plastic insert had just the right amount of "hold" for the plugs. Highly recommended!

Note the plastic insert for the holding the plug:

OK, here's a new plug. I checked all the gaps and they were all spot on. I did NOT use anti-seize on the threads, but I did put some dielectric grease on the inside of the coils when I reinstalled them.

Here's the first plug I pulled out. It's the one on the drivers's side of the engine. A bit of oil on the threads, but not bad. Like ColoradoDriver, you can see that I too had the PE5S plugs as OEM. The plugs were not hard at all to remove. Some initial resistance, but easily backed out.

Here are all the plugs. They are in order: driver's side plug on the left through the passenger's side plug on the right. Only the first plug had any oil on the threads, the other were dry.

Here's a closer look at the tips. I think they all look great, but I don't mind one bit that I changed them.

And finally, a closeup of the directions on the NGK box. The new plugs are not tapered, they have crush rings, so, as instructed on the box, I tightened the new plug by hand first and then used the socket wrench to turn it another 1/2 turn to crush the rings. The entire process from start to finish took about 45 minutes because I worked slowly and methodically AND because I took pictures! (shrug)

You sometimes notice an improvement in performance and fuel consumption.
Definitely saw an improvement in my idle and acceleration from stop. Much less of a delay.

Fuel consumption we'll see. I don't really track it.

Yes they often claim 60k for a set of Iridium plugs but I think that’s too much. Changing plugs or any other service item should be seamless with no noticeable change but as you say idling smoothness is often another indication it was overdue. I think 40k is probably more realistic.

Yep, I plan on doing shorter intervals for mine for that very reason.
