I keep my fob in my pocket. However, this was a car wash, and you can't keep the fob. You have to give it to the car wash guy. It's a similar situation when you valet. You don't keep the fob, you give it to the valet guy. Maybe next time the car wash guy / valet guy gets the fob, and I keep the key that's inside the fob. Be that as it may, I will contact Mazda about it and will post their response (if I get one). Maybe there's a super duper secret way to unlock the car if the fob is inside.

There are some setting for the lock behavior in the infotainment interface on the 18.

You can set it to lock when you walk away but if the fob is in the car...you didn't walk away. (dunno) This just doesn't make sense.

If you stand next to the car long enough with the key it will lock.

I've tried to lock the keys in both cars with keyless entry and failed.
The only way I can think of achieving this is if the fob battery needs changing.
