Lift gate light wont turn off when closed

How do I troubleshoot this sounds simple but I cant figure out

There is a switch located on the light

It supposed to be automatic when liftgate is shut it will turn off, mine is not turning off.

You are right. The switch only prevents the light from turning on when the gate is open. It will not force the light to stay on.
If the dash doesn't think the gate is always open, you've got an interesting problem. Wish I had a suggestion.
