rock chip problems with my 2017 CX5 soul red. my hood had a huge rock chip and some smaller ones in the front. what can I do to fix that now? as far as I know there is no touch up for this paint? im sure a new paint job will cost a lot (the hood and the entire front) see pictures attached link. can i file insurance claim to get it fix or repaint?

Get a clear bra (paint protection film). This stuff works great!

You have to go to an independent ppf installer in your area. Clear bras aren't something that a typical dealer would do.

My 2017 Soul Red has about 10 chips on the hood. I only have about 5,000 miles on it. I put 160,000 miles on my Jeep liberty with 0 chips on the hood.
I contacted Mazda corporate, they had a paint inspector look at it, and he confirmed that this is not from rocks, it's a defect in the paint or the paint application process.
Mazda agreed to replace the hood, and have a body shop paint it. Definitely contact Mazda, and see what they can do. They are definitely aware of the issue.

There are plenty of other threads on this issue.

FYI, this was about a 5-month process to get them to take responsibility for the chips on my car.

As for the big rock chip, check out those places that do paintless dent repair. They can usually fix those up fairly cheap. Then touch up the few little paint chips and get some 3M installed. Another problem with the soul red is that the under coat seems to be white. So any little chip is very visible. I put 3M on before it left the lot and after 3+ years it still looks pretty good.

called Mazda USA today and they said something about TSB with this color. They asked me to take some pictures where the chips are to see what they can do about it. So I mapped out with tape and numbering them. there are more than 150 rock chips less than 4k miles on it. see pictures attached. https://flic.kr/p/GPvJHo

Thanks, that's really helpful. I'm a week in and planning to get clear bra film. You've nicely highlighted which areas should get treated.

I've got some info that some here might find interesting.

I sold a soul red crystal CX5 last week that ended up having a 1/8" chip in the paint. We of course have to get it taken care of for the customer. Our internal body shop cost (what the body shop charges the sales dept) for that tiny chip was over $500!

Yes, Soul Red is one of the most expensive paints on the market

I have probably a dozen very small (ballpoint pen-head) sized chips on the front bumper cover of my '17 CX-5 @ 3500 miles. Not noticeable unless you're <3' away and really looking for them under the right lighting. I can't really attribute it to cheap paint seeing that the radar-equipped Mazda emblem cover has two tiny nicks as well. I guess it's just a fact of life driving on non-perfect road surfaces with other drivers *shrug*.

Someone posted this the other day... https://mazdashop.ca/products/premium-touch-up-paint-pen-mazda-cx-5-2017-2018?variant=36674024771

It's a Soul Red Crystal touch up pen. I got mine the other day to touch up a chip in the hood, and another on the A pillar. It's a damn good match. I mean, you can tell it's been touched up because I'm not brave enough to wet sand a car with less than 800 miles on it but the color is spot on. Here is a pic of the touched up A pillar ( I need to work on it a bit with some Meguiars compound to smooth the edges) : https://imgur.com/a/2VDcz

I had over 200 paint chips on my 2017 CX 5 soul red paint. Mostly on the front bumper and hood, but also some on the roof and sides. I first went to my dealer. They told me they were not aware of any problems with the soul red paint, that it must be the way I am driving. They said, I must be tailgating and or driving on gravel roads. None of which I do. I then went onto the MazdaUSA website and sent them a message with my complaint. Within 2 days, I received an email back from them, saying they were aware of the problem with the red paint chipping. They set up an appointment for me to meet one of their district managers at the local Mazda dealer. He inspected the car and agreed to have the car repainted at no cost to me. They repainted everything except for the rear bumper and hatchback, which had no chips. The paint was a perfect match. This was about 4 months ago, and so far no new chips.
