Smart Brake Support Warning

Been in my 2017 GT for about a month. There have been occasions where I have been within a few inches or so of the vehicle in front of me. Yet I have never seen the BRAKE! warning light display or heard any warning signals. Is this feature only for cruise control? I typically don't use it but thought the bake warning would be there for everyday driving? I do have distance recognition support system enabled and it does turn amber when getting close to other vehicles. but no brake light..

Thanks

It only works if you approach a vehicle too fast, not get close to one. I’ve seen it a couple of times where I intentionally didn’t reduce speed when something turned off in front and then the second stage is where it intervenes and applies the brake. Again in my case, everything was under control and intentional but it is very interesting. I wouldn’t experiment to test it, just hope you never see it ;-)

It might be more accurate to say that it works if you get too close when going too fast. If the computer calculates that you are not going to stop in time to prevent a collision, it stops the car for you [IN THEORY!]. You'll see the BRAKE! warning, and then if you don't brake, the car will do it for you.

A great way to test this is to make a large cardboard cutout that can stand by itself. Then aim at the cutout and go... don't stop! You will see how the system works then...IF it works. And if it doesn't work, you should not have harmed the vehicle. [I saw this in some video... don't remember where.] Remember that it does not work at speeds under 2 mph.

I have found it the sensitivity to be just about right. I have seen the warning a few times [intentionally AND unintentionally (my bad)], but never let it go so far as to have the car stop itself.

There's 2 versions:

  • Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
  • Smart Brake Support (SBS)

SCBS is the one that when activated doesn't show on the HUD "BRAKE!"
SBS is the one that does show on the HUD "BRAKE!"

For your reference, here is the descriptions from your country's brochure:

Basically SCBS operates at lower speeds while SBS operates at higher speeds.

How fast were you travelling (uhm)

Thanks all for the info. Xeler8ing, was traveling approx 5mph, so that would explain the no brake warning, however brakes were not auto applied. Will one day soon test out via cardboard boxes.

No problem :D

It works, the car needs to sense of an imminent incident for it to kick in.

We have SCBS in reverse and on just a very few occasions, it actually stopped my 6 when I was reversing into the garage (garage is slightly off centre and therefore I need to enter it on a slight angle).

Generally it knows nothing is going to happen therefore doesn't engage.

My US owner's manual indicates that the display occurs with SCBS as well. And I've seen it at lower speeds.

If that is the case then all it means that the system wasn't activated

(iagree)
The computer has to think that contact is imminent and unavoidable unless IT intervenes.(bike)

Keep in mind the low speed one won't engage if you're on the brake. I was behind a car turning right. He started moving. I looked over my shoulder left and let my foot off the brake. Rolled just a bit and the brakes slammed on. Turn to look: guy in front of me had stopped.
