Hissing noise at 40+ mph for 2017 CX-5

:
2017 CX-5
Our new CX-5 just crossed its 600 miles mark and we started to hear a very noticeable hissing sound when speed is above 40+ mph.

I had a separate alignment issue where the car would draft to the right, so brought the car to the dealer to get the car re-aligned and mentioned about the hissing noise. Long story short, alignment was out of spec and fixed for free (dealer said it's was very likely caused by shipping process when they tie the rods too tight, which I believe), but also said they can't reproduce the noise and that it might be the roof rails' extra drag (which is BS). I didn't want to push it this time as they fit me in last minute and was very nice about getting the alignment issue resolved. I plan to either go back soon or during my first service, but meantime, want to try to pinpoint the issue first.

I haven't been able to pinpoint it yet but sounds like its coming near the top/moon roof area. Does anyone else have similar experience?

I don’t, they transport 1000s of these things round the world and don’t bend track rods, they are lashed to the deck via the towing eyes. I’m more likely to believe the roof rails if the noise is coming from above. Are there any gaps etc? I think they are dealer fitted with makes me immediately suspicious, especially if they’ve managed to bend track rods before you got it.

No gaps I can see of - tried tugging them pretty hard and were very secure. The roof rails came with the car (listed on the original window sticker, not a dealer add-on), so I would assume they were installed in the factory or "port installed" as the website likes to call it. Unless it's standard practice for dealers to install roof rails even if they ordered the car with them from the factory.

Going to have my wife drive it over the weekend so I can investigate more (thinking the moon roof but the seals look perfectly fine from the outside).

Shipping, sure. Rods too tight, ehh, not so sure about that. Have you ever seen the cars being unloaded at the pier? When I was there, a few years ago, the drivers were paid by the car, and it was a race to get as many cars as fast as possible off the boat. Screeching tires, revving engines, horns honking, drivers yelling. Gave new meaning to the phrase 'drive it like you stole it.' I couln't help but notice the line of crashed cars waiting to be towed away for repair.

5 bux sez it's the moonroof.

Just for kicks, you could tape the entire perimeter of the moonroof on the top of the car. Just use something like electrical tape so it comes off easily. Close every last gap and drive to see if the noise goes away. Pull the tape back off and if you hear the noise again, something is up with the seal on the moonroof.

I think I've ruled out any door/window seal issues - the sound remains the same frequency/pitch even with the moonroof and windows open. It's actually more of a chirping sound than a hissing one...

I've narrowed it down to the passenger side and it's coming from the exterior. When i roll down the passenger windows, it's noticeably louder. Have an appointment with the dealer on Friday. I can duplicate the noise every time, so hoping they can figure out exactly what's the issue for such a new car....

Saw on some older threads that <2016 models have similar sound with youtube videos. Some said the axle seals needed some lube, and another poster said it's the brake grease points.. .very odd in both cases.

I have the same whistle, I think it is either the driver mirror or the roof rails. Does not appear to be coming from the sunroof.

Do the roof rails have a insert to cover the rail? I had a Mitsubishi that had a gap in the plastic insert that made a whistle type sound at higher speeds. The dealer fitted new inserts that had no gaps. Noise went away. If not, check the spoiler area for any gap. The tape idea mentioned before could help pin down the location.

Quick update

Took the car to my dealership yesterday. Went out for a test drive with the tech and he immediately heard the high pitch sound. They were very busy (even with my appointment) and will need to lift it up to a special rack to spin the wheels up to speed and identify the noise source. It’s gotten louder and higher pitch. The senior tech and adviser both said they’ve never heard of this noise before.

They put me on a loaner cx5 for the time being, will post update after I hear back.

UPDATE - transmission replacement needed

My dealer called and gave me the update. They brought the car up to speed on the jack and identified the high pitch whistling noise to be coming from the transmission. My adviser said their head tech had Mazda corporate on the phone while troubleshooting it and was given the authorization for a transmission replacement. He wasn't able to explain what exactly is causing the noise, but looks like this is similar to the TSB for the early models. Odd that my 2017 model is still affected (started only at 600 miles, and now only has 1000 miles!).

Although I'm satisfied with how my dealer has been handling this issue, I'm now concerned about this car's long term reliability. Transmission issue and off alignment for such a new car are troubling...

I'm tempted to ask the dealer and/or corporate for an extended warranty - anyone had any experience asking for some sort of complimentary extended warranty?

Sorry to hear this, especially when it originally affected 2012 to 2014 models? First your alignment than transmission, what’s next?

I have the exact same noise that you are describing. I have talked to others on here (owners of 2017 models) that also have this. I brought it to the dealership and drove with a tech. He definitely heard it and grabbed another 2017 to test drive. He said he heard the same noise. With about 5 people on here with their 2017 making this noise, another making from the dealership, Im starting to wonder if this is a bigger concern than a one or two kinds thing.

I created the original thread re: 2017 noise. I took comfort in the number of people reporting a similar noise, lol, but sheesh, transmission replacement? We now have 10k miles on the car and taking it for oil change this week.

I'm hesitant to have the car taken apart for a transmission replacement, given it's my wife's car and she can't hear the noise (or doesn't care). It's certainly not as loud as the pre-2017 transmission whistle/whine that resulted in that TSB.

If there was a TSB I could hand over when visiting, it would be another story, but I've tried to get the techs to listen to it and they can't hear it. It's definitely there, but it's just time consuming dealer-hopping to get this figured out. No other issues to report, so I'm probably going to ride it out.

yzhng117,

When you get your warranty bill/description, would you be willing to share the pic with us?

This is the car that came with the wheels out of track. Youve been sold a pup mate.

Id go back to the dealer and tell him you want your money back or a new car or you are taking it to an independent specialist to compile the first part of a lawsuit.

Dont let them touch it until youve got a second opinion but tell them you are taking it further.

Mine was definitely very noticeable as soon as we reach 40 mph. When we went out for the test drive with the tech, I asked him if there is route he prefers to get it up to 40 mph, and he just said let's get on the freeway. We reached 40 mph within 2 blocks and he immediately heard the noise and just said "OK, we can turn back now." The whole test ride took less than 30 seconds lol

Oh, wow! Ok, that is definitely different than mine. Mine is hardly audible. Windows have to be up, radio off, and HVAC on low or off. My wife can't really hear it.

Could just be a worse progression than what I have, however, mine has had the same tone since mile 1 and no other issues.

Either way, I am sorry your new car experience is off to this start. We love this car. It looks amazing, and has a lot of amenities. Also, I just posted in another thread how impressed I was with how this handled the snow this past week.

Just saw more responses on the 2nd page.

I can provide more details when I get the car back. I think it's too pre-mature to go through the lawsuit/lemon route, but will keep that in mind if the problem persists/comes back.

I am going to contact Mazda corporate to ask for an extended warranty (both bumper-to-bumper and powertrain with $0 deductibles).

Do people know what's the duration of Mazda's extended warranty (Total Confidence and Powertrain Confidence)? The website doesn't show any plan details, so maybe there is flexibility in it. Is a 5 year/60k miles bumper-to-bumper and 10 year/120k miles powertrain a reasonable request?
