There is an interesting story behind how Toyo Kogyo Co. Ltd became Mazda. The company founders name, Jujiro Matsuda, was very similar to Ahura Mazda (the Persian God of Light). So the Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd decided to go with Mazda in 1931. Even stranger since Mazda cannot be said as spelled in Japanese phonetics. Hence "Mazuda".
