How Long Has It Been?

Guest2018

This will either be an exercise in rank sadism or pure enjoyment. I love the irony behind it, however. This is ONLY for the Fun Loving CX-9 owners out there without a stick up their rear end so tight that it would take a surgical procedure which won't be perfected until the 24th century to remove. Buckle up.

How long were you successful at going without battle damage (door dings, scratches, outright dents, etc.) to your brand new CX-9 before some careless individual ruined that perfect finish?

Purchase Date:
Battle Damage (Type/Kind):
Mileage:

Purchase: August 2017
Battle Damage Report: None (Whew!) (boom06)
Miles: 4720

I know its gonna happen someday. I just don't want it to happen now. I must admit, I feel a little more pressure mounting each day she comes home with zero battle damage. I feel like a crew chief afterwards, examining her and getting her ready for the next mission.

I try to park out of the way entirely if available leaving no possibility for anyone pulling up on either side if at all possible. Also run multiple car cams 24/7. Still, it has been almost three full months and I can't help but wonder when the long streak will come to an end.

Well I'm only a week in, but nothing yet. On this car which I consider a work of art, it would bother me too much not to fix anything right away. If it gets a dent, it's going to a shop. At least for the first few years.

the first ding /dent / scratch is always the hardest, after the first cherry pop LOL, then you just roll with the punches and accept the fact that it will eventually happen, you increase your odds by parking further away from the entrances.

Hardest part about owning a new car for sure.

There's certainly a value in the carefree nature of owning an old car where if you saw a shopping cart racing toward it, you wouldn't waste your energy to stop it.

Had my virgin 2008 about 5 days and parked it in the last slot a little over the line to the clear side at a car dealer for some reason. It was kind of a windy day. Came out and saw a Chevy Avalanche parked about on the line to my side. Got home and saw the dent from their door smack in the middle of my driver's door. Pissed, i drove it for the next 160K+ miles figuring I would get a matching set elsewhere - never did.

Bought - 12/1/2007
Damage - pullable dent driver's door = pooched in but no paint break.
Miles about 20.

Proud to say (probably shouldn't) my 2015 bought with about 8K miles is dent free except for where my brother in law dropped a TV set on the rear metal bumper plate. Hard to see but I know it's there.

8mos into new ownership and a deer from nowhere crossed the dark road we were travelling on one night...caused a huge dent on the bottom rear passenger door and ripped the plastic wheel well cladding! Good thing I was able to snap back the plastic cladding. Deer was ok but we were shaken afterwards and $300 in PDR was the cost! Oh well at least we didnt hit the deer head on otherwise would've been a larger damage!

That's my sentiment exactly for now.

I know. I hope to extend the inevitable for as long as possible. I'm getting mentally prepared now for it, but it will probably be one of those "Oh, f - - - K. Why the hell would somebody be that %$#@% careless" moments. Then, like you say - just start rolling with it from there.

Man, I just don't want to give up the moment right now, ya know. Right now, I feel like - hey let's keep a good thing go'in!

Sorry to hear. 20 miles just sucks. That's way too quick. Far too soon, IMO. I hope you were able to source a really good paint-less dent repair pro. Those guys can be indispensable at times if they know what they're doing.

Ah, yes. The 'it can't be seen but I know its there' feeling. That one can be troubling at times. You tend to think more about the how than the what. But, since it was your bro-in-law you probably love him to death and don't think much about the how. (lol2)

Good that you and the deer were ok. Ironic, indeed because I just saw a White Pearl CX-9 today with the right-rear plastic wheel well cladding missing. Did not talk to the owner, so I don't know if they had a deer story to tell. $300 in PDR does not sound too bad for a collision with a Deer, of all things. You are right, that could have been much worse, both for the poor deer and for your CX-9, had that been a head-on strike.

Long live the Deer and the CX-9! (2thumbs)

Mine was dinged the third day after I got it. Could not believe. I parked waaaay far away, in a parking lot with few cars/plenty of spaces.
Person parked right next to me, dinged my door. There was no reason to park next to me; it was intentional.
I was pissed and them with a parting gift.

Since then, I've had about two dozen, hits, swipes, rubs, etc. I call my Cx-9 the piata - people love to hit it. I can't figure it out why.
I'm super careful where I park, leave plenty of space, and am not a jerk to anyone.

I just accept my car will get trashed, and it's a lot easier.

You are really stressing me out. Worry Meter just went up ten notches.

They did this all the time to my C5, but never my Viper. I thought that was the most bizarre thing. Nobody would park near the Viper when I left it 8 miles away from the entrance to the store. Seriously, I would park so far away that you needed Uber just to get to the front door. I did not mind walking. However, I never had a door ding by a careless driver in either one of them. So, the people piling next to the C5 never touched it and the Viper just somehow sat alone all the time. Strange.

Say it ain't so. Hopefully, you've got a good PDR guy on speed dial - or you are waiting to accumulate enough warrant to take it to the shop and have it repaired.

Maybe it is time for Cameras and a little Video Surveillance. Put a little pressure on their mind. Cause them to think twice about what might happen to them if they get caught causing damage to your personal property. Who knows - maybe that will curtail some of it. Maybe a Camera with a Cloud connection so you can monitor in real-time. See someone pull up and bang your beloved CX-9 - then be there when they return asking for their acceptance of liability and method of recovery. Let them know you have evidence to show the police, including their license plate and their physical description - all on video.

Like I said, who knows.

I just accept my car will get trashed, and it's a lot easier.

They say acceptance is the first step to recovery. However, I want to ride this train as far as I can for now! I hope others have similar success.

Had my Soul Red GT for almost 2 weeks now. Nothing yet! Crossing fingers it stays that way.

My experience with sporty/flashy cars, it doesn't matter where you park, someone always wants to park on top of it.

Congrats and hope the streak never ends. Keep it rolling as long as possible! (cabpatch)

Great color choice, too. (cool) If the Signature came in Soul with a Sand Napa interior, or even a Black Napa - would would have jumped all over it. We were hoping they would add additional colors to the 2017s for the Napa, but they didn't. So, we went White Pearl instead.

Battle Damage: Left-Rear Passenger side door abrasion
Mileage: 6004

That was a lot quicker than I thought it would be. Piled seven family members into the CX-9 and drove out to celebrate my Wife's birthday. Stopped to have lunch at a Casino out in the middle of nowhere. Parked at the very end of a row with no available parking to the right of the vehicle. Car Cameras show that some real bright individual pulled in too close in the parking space to the left, backed up and then for good measure pulled in even tighter as if too close was not close enough the first. The video shows the driver throwing the door open carelessly then standing inside the door with little to no space between his vehicle and mine while putting on a jacket. Pressing against his door, he put a compression mark on the right rear passenger side door. No dent. No clear coat scratch (amazingly enough). He then walked away with another woman.

They both looked directly into the camera, then at each other before heading to the elevators. Caught the license plate but did not report it.

It is one of those irritating abrasions that you cannot see unless the lighting is just right (1 inch in height and 1/16 inch wide). It was pure compression that caused it as you can't even feel the clear coat change its surface under your finger when you pass over it. That's why I missed it after returning to the car and did not see it until the next day while detailing the vehicle. I then searched the video files and found the culprit.

I hand buffed about 30% out but that's all she gave. You will miss it if you don't already know its there. But, it bothers me off nonetheless to know about it.

Wife had a great birthday, however. And, the wine tasting was a really nice cap to a long day driving through Wine Country in the 9.

I think we may have jinxed ourselves here. I also just found a scratch in my right rear door where the body flares. It must have been a hard hit as it went all the way to the metal.

Why is there no touch up paint available anywhere for the soul crystal! Not sure what i'm going to do in the meantime, maybe just put a bit of clear over it until I can fix when they come out with some touch up paint.

Sorry to hear - especially going all the way to metal, ouch! Can't see mine unless the lighting is just right. Sounds like yours is visible in any lighting condition.

I bought some White Pearl touch-up and it literally sucks - literally. I just does not apply very well into rock chips. How it would do with something that goes all the way to metal is unknown to me. It says it has a drying time of 20 minutes. I suspect it will have a hardening time significantly longer than that. I'm thinking of applying it liberally into the rock chip, letting it 'dry' and then just before it hardens, rolling it flat with something smooth until the touch-up material is even with the upper edge of the rock chip divot (trying to make it even and smooth). They got the color matched fairly well, but it does not apply smoothly enough out of the tube.

All the best with your fix. Bummer.

Cement splash on right side doors when driving near a construction area. When I tried to remove it, I thought it was dirt, and I have some swirls on the rear right doors :(

Traded 2017 for 2018.

Battle Damage has been reset to zero since 01 December 2017! Well, that's one way to get back in the game. (spin)

Having just bought my new car, this subject definitely crosses my mind. A few thoughts/observations, in no particular order:

Where to park: The first spot I try for is the spot right next to a handicapped space. 95% of the time, no-one is in the handicap spot, plus the handicap space is huge,
which means there's always lots of space next to it, even if there is a car there. I try to cheat a bit towards the edge of the handicap space, leaving lots of room on the other side.
If that's not available, I try to grab a spot at the end of a row, again, cheating to the outside edge.
Parking a mile away from the store door doesn't work. It attracts attention. You might as well hang a sign over your car that says "I'm new. Come and scratch me",
and there's always some idiot that thinks it's cool to go out and purposely scratch your new car.
Cars to avoid parking next to: Pick-up trucks. Self explanatory.
2 door larger cars, like older Camaros/Firebirds. The doors are so long, they have to be opened wide for the driver to get out. That's a dent waiting to happen.
Old clunkers. People who drive them don't give a crap about their cars, or yours. (I should know. I have a 15 year old Pathfinder that I don't care where I park it.)
With my new car, I actually try and park next to other new cars. Their owners are as scared about scratching their cars as you are.
I also try to avoid SUV's with car seats in the back, although that describes half the cars in a parking lot.
When mom comes back to her car with the kids, that back door flies open, and bounces off your car about ten times while the kids climb in, and the mom tries to buckle them in.
The kids or the mom don't care.
Lastly, most of the dings on my cars have happened when others have driven them, like my wife or my grown kids.
My kids don't care because it's not their car, and my wife doesn't understand what the fuss is all about. "It's just a car...." Arrggh.

Well written and thanks for the tips. I've done the handi space deal.
I like to park close to a remote "tree island" at the shopping center. That way, at least one side is safe and the other is far from the painted line.
I risk sap and bird poo but hey, that's easily cleaned off if I get to it quickly.

Lots of good tips. I would like another one - right hand corner spot (passenger side kerb) also works as nothing can be parker to your right and unless the car on your left backs in, the chances of getting dinged by the drivers door are minimised. Its all about minimising the chances!!

Battle Damage (Type/Kind): Windshield scratched
Mileage: 2500 KM

We have been getting lot of snow and freezing temps lately. On Christmas day and boxing day had to scrape ice off windshield and car and then noticed 3 deep scratch marks on front windshield. 2 are fairly light and 1 in center off windshield is fairly deep. No idea how I got them, if it was from scraping ice or road debris hitting windshield. Cant believe within a month windshield is already damaged. I so mad when I saw it and my OCD makes me focus right on it when I am driving. Wife was like not big deal you can barely see it. Will take it to glass shop tomorrow to see if it required repair or replacement.
