2017 CX-5 Soul Red Crystal Metallic

It seems like the Soul Red is the weak paint in Mazda? On the the Toyota RAV4 the Blizzard Pearl (White) is known in the RAV4 forum to delaminate and not just chip. Here is the link http://www.rav4world.com/forums/96-4-3-general/146098-paint-chipping-rav4-2010-v6.html

Yeah.... I will prefer Chips to "delaminate" that looks pretty bad.... but most chips if not taken care off would also show similar issues if not worse..... that is prone to rusting i wouldnt leave like that for long. especially when you are in snow region...

As promised here are the "paint defect" that we ( I ) are complaining about....... I'm finding 1 or 2 every month. (gah)

Please contact Mazda regarding this issue, and let them know there is a defect with their pant. We need more people to speak up so they address this issue. I'm currently in talks with Mazda regarding the paint defect on my CX-5 as well. They've escalated the issue to a specialist. Forward them every forum thread you can find regarding this issue, to make it clear that it's a defect.

My 2015 Soul Red CX-5 looks like someone shot it with a shotgun along with a cracked windshield! We clean it everyday after my wife gets home and each day is a new chip! I've only had it for two months and it has 50 more chips than my 1985 Mercedes or my 2001 BMW. I'm thinking there is a defect in the paint or Mazda uses less paint to keep the weight down. I'm not to happy right now with my purchase between that and the oil consumption...
I think i found a reason. If you wash the car everyday - your wax is non existent at this point. Clean it once every 5 months.

Haha! Not sure of the word for this, treason, treachery, mutiny??? All 3 maybe ;-)

On a similar note, I’ve been getting frustrated with the windscreen wipers smearing and streaking but today I used Griots Glass Polish on my mop to get rid of a stain after something corrosive dripped on it. The effect on the wipers is remarkable - back to new so I’ll be doing the rear screen too.

I’ve noticed a couple of small chips in the paint but I don’t consider them defects, they are just stone chips and with the amount of bits that ricochet off the car on a daily basis, I’m frankly amazed its as good as it is.

We purchases our Soul Red Crystal Metallic CX-5 in June. We believe the paint may be defective. The car has several paint chips in it. At first, we thought we just had the misfortune of getting some stone chips. We contacted the dealership when there were only three paint chips. We were told that the touch up paint was not yet available. The dealership did not feel there was a defect in the paint. We now have at least 10 small chips in the paint. Is anyone else having this problem?

Sadly no. This is standard Mazda pain jobs. And frankly deserves a class action lawsuit. I've had my 2017 Mazda CX-5 Red Crystal Metallic since April. I have about 15 pain chips in the thing so far. I suspect that sometime in the next 5 years I'm going to have to pay out of pocket to repair it so it doesn't look getto. Bonus. After 8 months on the frak'n market they still don't have a pain chip pen.

This will be my last Mazda.

I believe I saw in another post here that the Mazda Soul Red/Crystal Red utilized the same touch up paint. I even recall seeing the label on the paint listing both with a / between them.

As far as the chips, I would not hesitate to contact MNAO and state your case to them, and give them a chance to address your concerns and complaints.

One thing I have noticed with the stone chips, is that there is always primer remaining. I believe that problem of the susceptibility to chipping lies within the adhesion properties between the primer and the base color of the color coat. It may be due to chemical differences or it may be due to application methods as the primer coat is applied in an electro dipping bath, whereas all the other coats are applied by spray.

Good luck with the dealer. We have a 2017 CX-5 Soul Red. 7000 miles and about a dozen chips. Hood, both front quarter panels and both front doors. Both Mazda and the dealer basically told me to go pound sand. Told me it was not their fault. We also have a 2016 CX-5 in white that hasn't had near the paint problems. It has almost 30,000 miles and three chips total. I think the Soul Red is a beautiful color but the durability is non-existent.

I'm still working with Mazda on my chips, and so far they've been very responsive. Mazda had a paint inspector look at the chips, and they agreed that it's unusual, and stated the chips likely are not coming from rocks. They said the clusters are what's very unusual. The paint inspector said the hood should be completely repainted. Still waiting on Mazda's response to the inspection. Will keep you posted...

Good work!
Sometimes we forget that the dealers aren't ALWAYS useless and unresponsive. It's usually worth a try.

To be clear, all my communication has been with Mazda's Corporate Customer Service.
Mazda customer service contacted a dealer on my behalf, and the dealer said they don't have anyone who can inspect paint, so they referred me to a local body shop for the inspection.
The body shop reported back to Mazda Corporate that the chips are unusual, and likely did not come from rocks.
Mazda Corporate reported back to me that they are escalating to a district manager to see if they will cover repainting the hood under warranty.
Stay tuned...

Thanks for the clarification. That's an important distinction.

2015 Soul Red Chip Pics

My 2015 Soul Red looks bad!! The paint chips are everywhere!! I tried to upload the pics but it won't let me...Maybe the files are too large? I fixed the Oil consumption problem, switched to Liqui- Moly 0W-20 and it hasn't burned a drop in 3500 miles!!;)

My 2014 Soul Red has no visible paint problems at 38,000 miles. I don't drive close behind andone nor do I drive dirt or gravel roads though. Ed

This thread is about the Soul Red Crystal Metallic. It's a new color, only available on 2017+.

The issue isn't related to tail gating, or gravel roads. If you've seen pictures, you'll notice that the paint is chipping on these cars in clusters.

I got my car in May and i got the front 3M protection thank god. I still have rock chips on the A-pillars, above the windshield, and on the lip of the hood just before where the ppf starts. I wish i got the whole car ppf'ed.

Finally closed my ticket with Mazda corporate today. After going back and forth with my local service department, they basically told me to there was nothing they could do. I was told that the chips in my hood were normal rock chips, and that other people's experiences that I have seen on this forum (and others) doesn't prove that this issue is a problem or flaw in any way. When I asked about the paint pen being on backorder since early summer, the rep at Mazda corporate told me that the paint quality issues they're having with that have no correlation to the paint issues owners are having. Riiiight.

Got my car in April, and had a cluster of chips on the hood within 3 months. Since then, I've had more chips scattered throughout the hood and quarter panels. I spent a good amount of money getting my windows tinted soon after I purchased the car, and would have been happy to get some 3M as well, had I thought I needed it.

Might just try a touch-up kit I've seen here, but am really disheartened.
