Set shift to "P". Auxiliary power stays on.

2014 Mazda CX-5
Recently encountered a problem with "Set to P to turn off power". My 2014 CX-5, would not totally turn off the ignition. Auxiliary power remained on.So radio etc. stayed on.
Doors would not lock and it would not shut off after 5 mins. It was fully in Park. I started and shifted into park several times. No help. My son turn the car around(to face slightly downhill in my driveway and it went off.
First time I encountered that and it has not done it since. However, I called the dealer at that time and spoke to my service adviser. He went back to the shop and the first technician he asked told him, he just fixed one of those.
He told me to kill the power, keep your foot on the brake and push the button. Jam(slightly harder than normal, I assume) the shift into park first.
He then said according to the tech., I needed to change the "Shift assembly".$468.00CAD parts and labour. He said he didn't exactly know what the part was.
I have been trying to look up that part, but it is confusing.
Looks to me to be just the dust cover and cover for the shift console. Not sure if there is some sort of solenoid or micro switch there or if it is included in s"shift assembly" part.
Set service appointment for June 24th, but trying to research it first.
Anyone know more about this, I would appreciate your input.
Thanks

Sounds like maybe a defective On/Off switch. There's a TSB on this for 2013-14 models.

Can't find the original Mazda notification on this issue, but here's another internet reference to the problem:https://mazda.oemdtc.com/665/igniti...hen-pressing-startstop-button-2013-2014-mazda

"Set Power to Off" displayed after turning CX5 off

paris1 posted one TSB which is related to the inferior "Switch Unit", p/n: KDY0-46-040, in gear shift assembly. But like madar and paris1, I also remember there's another push-button engine start/stop switch TSB for similar issues but can't find it right now. Your dealer seems to follow the TSB with inferior "Switch Unit" in gear shift assembly, so do print the TSB out and hope for the best as I believe Mazda Canada should take care of the bill as Mazda knowingly put a bad part in there. Don't let them replace the Select Level Assembly KD31-46-100D、GHR5-46-100C like mentioned in the TSB that'd be a waste of money.

Thank you Kindly.

Thank you for your kind and knowledgeable reply, the time taken to reply with useful information is greatly appreciated.
I will contact Mazda Canada about the problem before I go to the dealer.

Wanted to thank yrwei52 , I called Mazda Canada and spoke with them. I was as humble as possible. My 2014 Cx-5 has 198,500 kms.
They paid the entire cost. Big Thank you to Mazda Canada.
Maybe they know that there is a problem and pending recall.
Great forum here.

Just so everybody knows what was wrong with it the rubber thingy on the lever was getting worn out and wont detect the shifter being in park. One thing you can do is to move and hold the shifter all the way to the left and try to turn off the car.
temporary image host
Well that^^^was clear as mud!

The switch itself is not bad. For some reason I dont know why mazda made the end part of the lever switch rubber instead of just being raw plastic. Oh well. Boss made this contraption. Lol. It fixed it though.

If you zoom in to the picture on the left we epoxy a plastic thing on lever and trimmed it. Its just a quick fix but it worked so its all good.
So the worn switch causing this problem is not internal wear like I thought, and you can fix the worn rubber level by epoxy it making the level thicker. But considering much labor involved and Mazda apparently has improved the part, I'd get a new $66.05 KDY0-46-040 switch unit to replace the worn one.

This concern may be caused by a worn switch unit.

To eliminate this concern, the switch unit material has been changed to improve wear resistance. Modified switch units have been established as new service parts.

I fixed it by applying some superglue+baking soda to the worn rubber area, being careful not letting the glue stick to any moving part .
