US Diesel's big splash introduction

Alternative slogan with Bee Gees Disco beat: Staying AliiIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiIiiiive.

Mazda announced diesel hybrid CX5 in 2020. 20% better than current mpg. Will primarily be for EU and Japan. 48 volt system with Toyota collaboration. Article from nikkie business review says its current diesel is most efficient in the world. Was not aware of this fact. So 20% on current numbers will be 40 mpg US avg. Not shabby. Mazda might release it in US as well.

Think you guys need to cross all your fingers, toes and everything else so that a diesel variant has some chance of making it there!

Along side the RX9, yo! ROFL

I dont doubt it will come to Europe. Maybe not 2020 but 2021/22. The US - I doubt it. New Toyonda Hybdrids are damn impressive. to 60 in 6.9 with 50ish mpg and no trunk penalty.

Yup. New RAV4 is where it's at.

219hp (combined electric/gas).

41% thermal efficiency of the gas engine.

Front/rear torque split ranging from 100:0 to 20:80, far surpasses CX5's 50:50 max.

Weight dist 51/49 F/R.

Double wishbone rear susp.

0-100kmh is 8.1 seconds, you can figure 0-60 is around 7.8-7.9 (0-100kmh is actually 0-62mph). Matches the CX5.

Fuel efficiency DOMINATES, at 4.5L/100km, which translates to 52mpg highway.

3600# tow rating, btw, which is only 800# less than the CX5 2.2D, which the US won't be seeing this decade, it seems.

I get it if you're a Mazda fanboy, but on paper, the CX5 just got taken out back and put down like Old Yeller.

Wait 219HP (30 more HP) than the CX-5 but same 0-60? I think it should be a bit faster than that....

MPGs are higher but then again how much is the hybrid's price?

It might be faster than stated, but even if it's not, it's a heavier vehicle I'd bet. The CX5T would be a more fun ride, but it will get half the fuel economy of the Toyota, and that's just too steep a price for a car that's still, even by my best estimates, nearly 6 seconds to 60. Especially when I drive 100 miles a day sometimes.

To be fair, CX-5 is also 5 or 6 years old. Glad competition is stepping up and I hope Mazda sees that.

I only want a 203~206hp naturally aspirated 2.5L and 8-speed tranny Toyota drivetrain with a gen-1 CX-5 body.

This 2019 Toyota RAV4 hybrid is impressive on hardware but the MSRP would be at ~$40,000!

Yeah. No. The outgoing 2018 model fully loaded RAV4 Hybrid AWD is like $34.2K. Toyota isn't going to bump it to @$40K. No way, no how. They aren't stupid, and they know the RAV is an entry-level vehicle. The 2017 to 2018 Camry went up $2K for the same trim level, as an example analogous to the new RAV.

Fully loaded with nearly every option, I bet the RAV4 Hybrid ticks in at $35-37K, and you can get the XLE with the Hybrid stuff, which I bet comes in at $31K and change (nearly $32K). MSRP.

Certified pre-owned model with <20K miles on it, same year model as purchase year? I'd bet it can be had for $25-28K depending on options with the Hybrid AWD drivetrain.

IMO the problem for Mazda is even if the CX-5 SkyActiv-X 2.0L with a 6-speed tranny is available in 2020 MY, the specs would be still lagging behind this 2019 RAV4 Hybrid both on power and fuel efficiency. And there's nothing else we can see in the future from Mazda which can over-take the performance AND fuel economy from this 2019 RAV4 Hybrid.

I thought part of the tie up between Mazda and Toyota was that Mazda would get to use Toyotas hybrid systems? The new CX-X to be assembled in the US would be the obvious choice to get this.

I thought Mazda was looking into reviving their rotary for EV/Hybrid use.
